What is retro? Anonymous Board owner 04/19/2025 (Sat) 14:38:26 No. 187
We might as well have this conversation now. I know most people feel that the term "retro" as it applies to games should be cut off after 5th gen. This is fair, since after that point games really did start to get smoothed down and corporatised. Not to mention 3d graphics got much better in the 6th gen. A lot of people with this mindset usually suggest a /v2k/ board. I have to say though, if you want to talk about dead boards, a board dedicated to only two console generations would definitely be one considering the traffic we get around here. On the other hand some people use a simple rule of if console is 20 years old then its retro. This makes things simple and let's face it, none of us are getting any younger. Even GCCX has accepted the PS2 and Gamecube as retro though they are played rarely on that show. I think the 20 year rule is good but the problem is you will inevitably face the issue where you end up talking about the 360/PS3 and at that point you're very clearly not in any sort of world where things feel retro. That gen had its own fads and expectations that are clearly different from the ones that game before it. So another option, and one I'm pulling a bit towards and I know some people won't like, is that "retro", at least as far as this board would be concerned, will include 6th gen + DS and PSP and that is the absolute cutoff. The 20 year people will have their stuff and it is nice to be able to talk about Sega's entire hardware lineup on one board. And there are definitely a good amount of ps2 games that still have a experimental retro feel to them. The DS and PSP besides the 20 year rule, their major benefit is that they received a decent amount of retro game remakes and it just makes it easier to talk about those games when no one has wonder if they're allowed to talk about them. HOWEVER, in the event that the board does actually get a lot of traffic or there's too much talk of Halo, then a /v2k/ split at that point would definitely be justified and enacted. But tell if you have an opinion different than what I laid out above.
>>187 I'm fine with PS2/GC/Xbox + DS + PSP. There's so many GBA series that continued on DS or PSP that it becomes awkward to discuss them avoiding the elephant in the room. Fina Fantasy Tactics, Castlevania, Yu-Gi-Oh in general... When (more likely, if) there's enough traffic to discuss starting up /v2k/, the ruleset can be revisted then. I suggest the following rules clarifications: >PC games released on December 31st, 2007 or earlier allowed >Same for arcade games >Pinball is allowed regardless of release date >Romhacks/mods are allowed if the game they're based on is allowed >Homebrew is allowed if the system it's made for is allowed >Remakes can be discussed if the game it's a remake of is retro
How do these rules apply to pc games, is the cut off 20 years absolute for them?
>>193 I'm not 100 percent sure but I'm thinking it should be 2004/5 at the latest and not roll ahead. Just so people aren't talking about 360 era games.
>>194 I agree. Half Life 2 and Doom 3 are already pushing it as it is. Including the likes of TES Oblivion and fucking Crysis has always been ridiculous, which is why the latter was a common vehicle for troll threads.
People say /vr/ went to shit with the inclusion of 6th gen, but I've always felt that was coincidental since the entirety of 4chan was going to shit around that time. Still, I'm fine with a more safe set of rules if that's what people want.
>>199 In a way, I suppose that's true. Had 6th-gen been included from the board's inception, it may not have changed the board's character much simply due to the fact that the brain-rotted zoomers who grew up with those consoles simply weren't on 4chan just yet. The problem is when the rule change happened, it was like the floodgates suddenly burst open and they swarmed in all at once without giving a shit about lurking or acclimating to the existing board culture or etiquette, and unlike what's currently happening right now on this site, there was absolutely no effort on the part of the mods to help ease the transition.
>>200 PS2 games definitely feel retro to me, at least the early ones since they are basically just upgraded ps1 games
>>201 Yeah, I'd say the first couple of years of that generation were still rather firmly rooted in older gaming conventions reminiscent of what came before, even on the Xbox. It's around 2003/4 where I feel like the transition toward more modern game design was ramping up, and by 2005 the games on those consoles are pretty much indistinguishable from 7th-gen games and beyond.
>>202 For me, 2004 is the latest year for what is to be considered "retro".
>>187 There is also the problem that new generation consoles are released before they stop making games for the previous generation. So maybe it is better to go by generation and fixed (not relative) year. I think many would agree that 6th generation have some games that could classify and some that could not and most would agree that it is stupid to keep using relative years.
>>207 So you mean its better to just include all games from the entire generation? I'd might agree with that. It's not like the board would be better off just because you wouldn't be able to discuss sakura wars so long my love for ps2 otherwise.
>>208 Roughly yes, but setting an absolute cut-off year to prevent games released when 7th generation consoles existed but on 6th generation consoles to count, and this cut-off could be set anywhere from the release of 6th generation consoles, so up to discussion.
>>209 There could just be a no multi-plats rule where if your ps2 game also released on the ps3 then it's not allowed.
What about homebrew? Should there be a case where homebrew is not allowed or no?
>>211 Zelda TP fags are not gonna like that lol
>>217 Should Wii be considered retro? It is just a gamecube with slightly more ram afterall
>>218 Only the specs are "retro". Everything else about it is decisively modern, even if its implementation of said modern concepts (with the exception of waggle) was subpar compared to the other consoles.
>>217 There could maybe be an exception where if the only 7th gen console it came on was wii then its fine. This would also be so okami isn't excluded.
>>222 Or better yet, just take into account what console the game was originally developed for. Though the Wii version of TP came out first, it was primarily a GC game and only came out a few weeks later because Nintendo wanted to promote it as a Wii launch title.
>>223 That could be a little harder to identify depending on the case.
