Bungie were definitely planning on doing something with
Marathon for a while. When they started breaking up with Microsoft in 2008/2009 they scrubbed a lot of references to
Marathon while developing
Halo: Reach, even though all of Bungie's previous
Halo games usually had some sort of connection to
Marathon through symbols or iconography. Bungie wanted to hold the rights to
Marathon themselves.
The problem is when you look at the credits for the original Marathon games and see names like Randy Reddig, Chris Geisel, Greg Kirkpatrick, David Longo, Colin Kawakami, Alex Rosenberg, Ryan Martell, Alain Roy etc. None of these people were at Bungie by the time
Halo: Combat Evolved came out. Maybe a few people worked on
Myth here and there, but once the 21st century rolled out, Bungie was a completely different studio. The
Marathon game that was being planned around 15 years ago still would've been far removed from the original trilogy.
