Marathon Anonymous 04/17/2025 (Thu) 19:13:00 Id: a314ba No. 1117696
now that (previous) /v/ is gone I can be honest: yes I saw the nuMarathon and genuinely think it has potential I liked the visuals, some of the gameplay, the music and I can tell it's going to build up on the lore from the previous games. also it's making me want to play the older games too just for the previous reason >it's an extraction shooter yea I know, always wanted to try that anyway discuss and post images NOW
(326.27 KB 458x603 1669414017912829.png)

>>1117696 I don't have an issue with the game in isolation. But after what Bungie has done to Destiny I can't have much faith in this game.
Concord 2 electric troon bugaloo
>>1117696 I honestly like the way it looks. I hate everything else about it that is known.
>>1117696 Visuals aside, it doesn't really set itself apart from the myriad of other shooters on the market. I get it offers a different setting than Tarkov and Hunt, but I don't think that's enough. I can see it succeeding simply because its casual enough for the average person, bungie's name and what goodwill is still left over from those who still give a shit about Destiny, and the lack of standards of the general public. They'll play anything if you sell it to them hard enough. But no proximity chat? Not F2P? Heroes? They're going to monetize the fuck out of the game AND make you pay a premium all the while actively discouraging the fun of proximity chat. The last COD added that shit and everybody ate it up. I don't know man, this thing just has so many red flags.
>>1117696 >>1117696 looks both cool and retarded, depending on the picture >>1117747 it being tied to bungie is the biggest red flag desu >>1117772 as bad as concord was, at least everyone who somehow bought this got refunded after it died less than two weeks in kek
>>1117696 I'll say that cinematic was pretty great. If only the game felt more like it.
(551.44 KB 2250x1460 Gny2RThW8AACCp4.jpg)

>>1117772 genuinely i dont understand the concord comparison, they dont look alike nor will they play similar nor are they even the same genre i at least think the new artstyle has alot of merit despite being a departure from the originals and i consider myself a fan of the og trilogy <you never played the ogs before mandalore etc etc etc yeah yeah the games are free on steam though and i think they are a fun time
Marathon had aliens in it yeah? do you think they'll revamp them to be cute girls this time?
>>1117696 I dont care much for the game but I want the girl with big blue lips to kiss my penis
>>1117696 >I can tell it's going to build up on the lore from the previous games Can you? Because the devs sure as hell can’t. They don’t have anything written yet.
I think the game looks like garbage. The maps look like unfinished source engine developer textured maps. They turned one of my favourite shotguns in FPS games into a square shotgun with square shells straight out of Starfield. Let's not talk about the awful looking characters with random bullshit scattered across their design like one of the tranny looking synthetic people having CTRL and ALT written on the straps of their backpack. All the design decisions are insanely corny and lame, for example one of the SMGs in the game is just named "BRRRRTTT SMG". All around a lame and ridiculous looking game, especially that short film.
Honestly I just don't know how anyone can watch that lore video with all that production value and more interesting settings/environments and then see the game is a boring ass extraction shooter and not feel like all the budget went into a short film and not the game. I also hate it when the promise of more content is with upcoming seasons and you still have to pay to play the game up front when there are tons of other free to play extraction shooters out right now that aren't lacking content.
(27.30 KB 478x253 I HAVE TO KILL THE MOLD.jpeg)

I genuinely do not care how "good" they game is. I'll never play it because >they turned a classic story-based singleplayer FPS into a meme fad PvP extraction shooter >multiplayer games are a fuck
>>1117696 This game screams DOA, I am not sure what it can offer.
The marketing campaign was really well done. I was genuinly interested in the gameplay reveal just because they hyped it up like it was something more than just some random ass extraction shooter. Then I saw the gameplay and lost all interest
>>1127893 I was rolling my eyes at the talk show format they did the reveal in though. It's always a bad sign when something feels pretentious the moment it starts.
>>1117696 >extraction shooter for babbies i think im unironically the audience for this game but i wont buy a ps5 for it
>>1117696 I like the overall art design, and the choice of music for the trailers (Justice, and I think there was also Gesafelstein) was great, but an extraction shooter? With Marathon as the title? The game feels also too generic, it has the feeling of Tarkov with bits of Apex Legends.
>>1126291 <free on steam cool
>>1117696 Gameplay looks slow, the art direction looks looks like slop (I do like the amor designs though), and it shits all over what was originally made in terms of what they were somewhat going for. Others may try it, I'm just going to ignore it and forget it even existed.
>>1117696 Nah, two looks at this game so far and it's just planetside 2 gunplay with a worse development team, mechanics I do not want, hero shooter bullshit I do not want, and corpohomo aesthetics that lost the election bungie is dead and parasites walk around wearing its skin as a suit
(4.91 KB 275x202 Nah.jpg)

>yes I saw the nuMarathon and genuinely think it has potential You are a fucking retard Go back to grinding on Destiny 2
>>1117696 To say it's aesthetic is unique is one thing, which i would agree with. But i don't think it looks good as an actual game that is supposed to be named Marathon. Basically everyone will admit to not playing the originals, but i did on a friends MAC computer back in the day, and later finished all of them on the aleph one ports. So I'm just confused with this other than companies like to use old IP names? it makes as much sense as connecting Human Head's Prey (which was technically originally 3DR) to whatever Arkane was working on that needed to be named Prey. You can't be serious other than thinking it looks like a stupid excuse to mix up an old name with a completely new name. I might have been more forgiving if it wasn't an extraction shooter at all goddamn it. If you want to bring back the lore of Marathon then do it in a meaningful way like as in making another Halo style game or whatever if you have to be modern about it.
the fucking thing about the game for me is this; the vibes & look of the game I actually like lot, but its not fucking Marathon in ANY measure. It quite clear they're only using the name to milk its pseudo connections to Halo and Uoutuber bait; always remember, fucking check who's still AT the studio who made your favorites games. Chances are, designers, programmers, lead creatives & devs are all either gone, been demoted, or haven't directly worked on a fame in decades. That's not even accounting for people who get forced out or lick the boot to keep their jobs if the game did not have the name and vague connection to proper Marathon; barely anyone would care, people who go "hey that looks cool! can't wait to try it out." the promptly forget about it a week later Plus most people these days only know about it thanks to Mandalorgaming; the usual "Youtuber Effect" at play here.
>>1126291 I think it's because the characters look very goofy. Not goofy in the same way as concord but goofy enough to make you think about it.
>>1129788 >Plus most people these days only know about it thanks to Mandalorgaming; the usual "Youtuber Effect" at play here. I hate seeing people who've never opened DOSBOX I know Marathon was Mac in their life talking about retro FPS, or "boomer shooters" as they call them, that they only know through Civvie11 videos. Blake Stone? Yeah I'm sure the zoomer who spends all day on Fortnite and Roblox played that. This reminds me of the "Nice opinion on the obscure 90s JRPG, which YouTuber did you get it from?" meme. I don't know about 4chan, but 8chan and its relatives like zzz always had a strong retro FPS community, so you'll see people here especially pissed off about that shit.
For what its worth: The game has been in development hell since Activision bought them. Its worth noting that Marathon is spelled "IVIathon" in the leaked contract. This may imply that it started out as a trilogy of sequels, i.e. IV(4), V(5) and VI(6). The leaked contract also states that it started out as an "action-shooter". IDK if I would describe the OG Marathon games as action shooters. I could have sworn it mentioned "IVIathon" as a platformer somewhere in the contract, but I'll have to see if its still uploaded somewhere.
>>1129932 Great, it looks like at some point they uploaded a different version of the document online and got rid of the original document.
>>1129932 >The game has been in development hell since Activision bought them. Bungie were definitely planning on doing something with Marathon for a while. When they started breaking up with Microsoft in 2008/2009 they scrubbed a lot of references to Marathon while developing Halo: Reach, even though all of Bungie's previous Halo games usually had some sort of connection to Marathon through symbols or iconography. Bungie wanted to hold the rights to Marathon themselves. The problem is when you look at the credits for the original Marathon games and see names like Randy Reddig, Chris Geisel, Greg Kirkpatrick, David Longo, Colin Kawakami, Alex Rosenberg, Ryan Martell, Alain Roy etc. None of these people were at Bungie by the time Halo: Combat Evolved came out. Maybe a few people worked on Myth here and there, but once the 21st century rolled out, Bungie was a completely different studio. The Marathon game that was being planned around 15 years ago still would've been far removed from the original trilogy.
>>1129932 >>1130020 Here we go. The text version still has the weird spelling, It was spelled as >l\/larathon" >("iVlarathon") So that is L \ / L and i V L. So that only implies a 4. They do however, use i \ / and i for an M near the bottom of page 3. >>1130099 Even if they had the same people, the game would still be vastly different then when they started. TF2 was in development for 9 years and came out vastly different then it started.
The game looks like shite and it's a paid extraction shooter in 2025 with the added issue of being made by the pozze shell of Bungie. All with no fucking Proxy voice chat to boot.
>>1130909 >paid extraction shooter I understand not wanting to pay for a game you aren't interested in the first place, but you're saying that like it isn't the norm. Tarkov is extremely paid, to the point that it has a legion of captured cuckold faggots who have paid over $200 extra for basic QOL features. Hunt: Showdown is paid with battlepasses + individual DLCs for cosmetic stuff. Dark and Darker is F2P but if you want access to the full features of the game you have to pay to upgrade your account. Arena Breakout: Infinite, otherwise known as the Chinese Tarkov Ripoff or Charkov among me and my friends is the most F2P one I can think of, but you have to basically pay a sub for a larger Secure Case which is part of what Tarkov players get by paying out the ass to upgrade their account. Extraction Shooters still hasn't crested over the way that Battle Royales did, the market doesn't really have a lot of heavyweight successes yet.

>>1117696 I'll buy this game if they add Bazz to it. I hear former Concord devs joined their team.
>>1126310 no but at least we have the power of porn this >>1126466 >Can you? I did say it's GOING TO >>1126427 same >>1129634 akshualy I've never played D2 >>1129788 >but its not fucking Marathon in ANY measure. it literally is , only difference is it's made in 2025
>>1130205 >The text version still has the weird spelling Isn't that an OCR artifact?
>>1132278 Juding from "Ancillary Markets" also getting slapped with the 1337 speak M I also think it's an OCR transcription problem. Interesting schizo take for it being a trilogy though.
>>1117696 Me and my friends absolutely hate the way they're going with the "simple sci-fi, flat colored objects" aesthetic. It looks absolutely horrible. I've told them several times that most of the characters look like they belong in a exotic cyberpunk strip club. It looks stupid for what is supposed to be a marathon reboot. Synthetik did it way better. Once again AAA gaming is btfod by indies and older titles.
>>1133243 >most of the characters look like they belong in a exotic cyberpunk strip club. Also this is probably why you have some people trying to shill for this game and make excuses for it. The character designs purely appeal to faggots and coomers.
>>1117696 Ironic shitposting is still shitposting.
>>1117696 I kinda liked the planar artstyle they were going for, smooth plastic lines with no curves or texture to them with even the holographic sights just being a flat texture projected on top of the gun then they put this artstyle into a generic looking swamp and I'm just very confused.. The game would look a lot better if they had more hiveworld/dystopian urban maps, maybe rooftops for places with more open sightlines
>>1117696 I think you're a retarded faggot with shit taste. What now, sludge sucker?
(699.77 KB 1029x958 bungie dev.png)

Nah.
>>1134037 Post the senior producer tranny next.
(1.13 MB 384x288 1408161122631.gif)

>>1117696 >genuinely think it has potential
Marathon is an important game, and what's going to make or break it is narrative. This is the real secret sauce of online games. FFXIV, early Fortnite, Destiny 1; it's the narrative experience of all these that brought the playerbase together, because it creates meaning in the gameplay loop.
For gameplay as well, it hits an important balance of weight which leads into proper positioning. Warzone is too fast, Fortnite has too much mobility, Apex is too twitchy. The more movement options you have, the less level design matters, and so Marathon has a great opportunity here to make the gameplay heavier and grounded so that players aren't just doing fucking backflips over players.
I don't give a fuck about an extraction shooter with no end goal. I want to teleport to random places with unreliable context of what's going on beyond killing the things an AI tells me to. Modern developers really fail to understand it doesn't take that much to keep a player invested in playing a game, so long as the actions they are performing are Interesting.
(25.03 KB 340x583 Le fuck.jpg)

>>1117696 I thought it looked like a shitty console shooter with nothing remotely interesting about it. What are you retards seeing in it?
>>1117921 >But no proximity chat? I don't get why people want proximity chat in the game. It ruins the atmosphere of the game when you hear some 24 year old guy talking in a monotone 11pm bedroom voice to you, not even counting the absolute nonsense you have to hear from thirdies. The cinematic trailer perfectly encapsulates the tone of a 'friendly' engagement without proximity chat. The community then says, "Oh well just have a toggle for proximity chat", which will also ruin the fucking game because players won't be able to discern who has voice on or off, ruining the dynamic of it in the first place for team-based play. >Why'd you start shooting I was talking to them >Oh well >Now they're calling us retards Wow I can't wait to explore a hostile, eerie world with Brazilian internet cafe kids crying into their headset.
>>1129757 The old campaign/ multiplayer split of shooters is a bygone model. It's too much effort to split development in half over 7 hour campaign mode when 90% of player playtime will be in the multiplayer mode. You want emergent gameplay and a story that pushes players to explore and theorycraft online. All free advertising. What's to talk about with a 7 hour campaign?
>>1132113 Bazz grew on me. Shame her game died.
>>1140703 >I don't get why people want proximity chat in the game. Have you played a fucking extraction shooter?
>>1140970 After watching this I'm pretty sure i don't want to play it. Bungie is dead.
>>1140970 >>1143572 No one wants to play it and no one here cares for Kiketubers shilling it.
>>1143587 Proximity chat is too memetic. It's a vibe killer.
>>1144048 That one specific youtuber saying 'where does it fit' is basically just reading points off a dot point list of things Bungie told him to say. It looks so aggressively markety and he's really not making it stand out as something unique either. Second video is the correct take saying it's just cashing in on a name that has no resemblance to the OGs
>>1144207 >youtuber saying 'where does it fit' is basically just reading points off a dot point list That video brings up a good point. >https://youtu.be/NZqoVNjfOHo?t=1133
(331.36 KB 1608x1288 Rot Pocket.jpg)

>>1117772 Though Marathon is borderline fruity it at least has the leg up on Concord or Deadlock in the character design department. No self-insert old ladies, obese ogres or non-buy-nary shit.
>>1117696 You're a genuine retard for believing bungie will do anything good after the shitshow that's destiny 2 they're the only company that deserve layoffs and getting absorbed by sony >t. destinyfag
(130.36 KB 1280x720 PCsisters.jpg)

>>1145333 I hope Sony just spit them out honestly. That probably seems weird since I just said it looked better than two contemporaries but I actually don't even regard most of these PCsister skinner boxes as gaming at all, full disclosure.
>>1145333 >t. destinyfag Playing Destiny 1 solo was a miserable experience, none of the raids or DLC was approachable. Your shit game was not some masterpiece when it couldn't even tell it's own story in the actual game. But in a FUCKING PHONE APP. You Destinyfags are gen Z no doubt with your low fucking standards.
>>1145479 As long they fire them first and keep the destiny IP hostage i want no leftover from bungie to touch it again >>1145575 your problem for not asking people on the tower for help your problem for buying a coop game with no friends >bitching about the grimoire stories bungie listened to retards like you and look at how bad the story is now
>>1140696 Some zoom-zooms are suckers for mediocre online shooters with predatory MTX. Look how many people on the board unironically like Destiny since the recent refugee surge.
>>1140970 Oh, it's the guy who sucked off Forever Winter the rebranded shitty crypto game made by niggers.
>>1117696 The CGI trailer looked impressive, but the gameplay trailer wasted no time exposing the charade and revealing just how lifeless the actual game really is.
(73.32 KB 466x440 1727462746393409.png)

>>1145703 >i want no leftover from bungie to touch it again Or any "veteran CoD devs". kek I'm not completely closed mined about shooters honestly, it just needs to be something that finds a gap in the market and doesn't gouge me. Helldivers II is good. It's just that in the Never Ever days people would tell me "Japanese games are dead", "niche", "one and done" and then wanted to blame me for shit like Concord but Pepperidge Snoy remembers. I've been on about this flavour of slop since LawBreakers in think, I knew Concord would be shit before ever seeing a character.
>>1140970 Not watching this shit, explain to me whats appealing. It looks like a shittier halo with barebones gameplay
>Tarkov at home. I seriously think the game will die in less than a year. People will play the FOTM slop and then move on.
>>1117696 The trailers and key art are amazing but the actual in-game art is so fucking bad. I don't understand why they slapped that anti-soul gas over what is supposed to be a very clean F1 aesthetic. I haven't played extraction shooters and I don't think it's a concept that has been explored enough yet so I don't mind them having a go at it but the gameplay just looks like a generic whatever ADS shooter with bad MMO-lite design sensibilities. A lot of good potential ruined by lazy execution.
(639.01 KB 1920x1080 ServerRoom_003.jpg)

(711.63 KB 1920x1080 ServerRoom_004b.jpg)

>>1148973 >the actual in-game art is so fucking bad They had the perfect blueprint with Mirror's Edge and its sequel but instead they make it all murky and ugly. It should look shiny and reflective with a little bit of smudges. Instead it looks like everything is unfinished and dull.
>>1151320 >Halo >Destiny >Marathon Bungie seriously just trying to copyright random words from the dictionary, huh. No originality.
(435.51 KB 800x425 Your_Ass_is_Grass.png)

>>1144117 >sneaking up on a player to whisper, yell, or say something funny in their ear isn't a vibe Nice try. The whole point of extraction shooters is to sneak around, build up a loadout, then hunt players who have less. That shit is inherently not friendly engagement. Even in a team you all take turns dunking on enemy players if you're equipped and know how to ambush.
The game is DOA and if the rumours of Destiny content creators, secretly hating the fuck out of the game is true. Then even the shills can only pretend.
>>1126291 >i at least think the new artstyle has alot of merit despite being a departure from the originals artstyle looks like when you're building something in LEGO and run out of a certain color.
>>1151451 I'm not saying this derivative trash looks good, but anyone that liked Destiny cant be trusted
>>1151373 >copyright random words All the words hold significant historical and mythic value. Halo obviously is biblically referencing the Angels who destroyed Saddam and Gomorrah the same way Halo Rings can wipe entire solar systems of life. Destiny is all about using luck and chance and fate to win. Marathon was an ancient battle between Athens and Persians. That said Bungie naming their new game SIMPLY Marathon again when they already made Marathon in 1994 is fucking LAZY.
The game itself is almost assuredly going to underperform, I'm not sure who the fuck thought people wanted a Marathon extraction shooter instead of a singleplayer game, but whatever.
>>1126291 marathon is in the same genre as concord REALLY. the genre is called out of touch gen X produced multiplayer slop that millennial troon devs are abusing to spread The Message instead of making a successful product. the idea that this one is "extraction" and the other one was... some kinda Overwatch clone, I guess? totally inconsequential, doesn't matter at all. what matters is that both games are designed for a fictional modern audience that wants gay and ugly things in a sanitized multiplayer environment with no voice chat etc. it's globohomo, it's gay and it's going to flop. >>1145300 anon... what did you see? it couldn't have been the game. the game is full of literal troon characters. it's as "non-binary" as it gets. even people shilling it are openly talking about how it's "androgynous" and such. it's made by trannies for trannies.
(698.54 KB 1920x1080 1744471829013716.jpg)

>>1133243 damn that would've been cool they're probably even only trying to into that flat style because of performance concerns
>>1151591 My point is that even Destiny fags can't pretend to like this.
>>1151320 >they make it all murky and ugly I think they made it with HDR in mind. I watched gameplay trailer on oled TV and it was significantly more bright and vibrant.
(1.19 MB 300x413 Game_Over.gif)

>>1152598 >they made it with HDR in mind How can they get the coveted billions of sales if they make the game for only people that own OLED or have good looking HDR functions? Do they seriously think people are going to buy OLED for this ONE GAME?
>>1131844 >but you're saying that like it isn't the norm. I mean, to be fair there are only like a dozen extraction shooters on the market, and all the paid ones outside of Tarkov and Hunt are basically dead. Let's not forget the Starsiege one that died so hard it got pulled from digital stores.
>>1154131 I agree that it is a small pond with a couple of big fish in it, I just thought calling it paid was a dumb contextless dunk. There are way more things I'm concerned about with how the game is gonna turn out. Bungie has to do a lot of legwork to make in dejewsustomizable guns whereas milsim extraction shooters just have to copy all of the work that was done by actual firearms manufacturers. If the game doesn't have the breadth of customization that Tarkov and Arena Breakout Infinite has Bungie is missing a big part of what makes these games fun. Another issue is the extent of how much decision there is outside of your weapons. If what I heard from some of the alpha testers have said is true, there isn't any gear outside of the guns and customzing them? Armor, healing items, drugs, food, ammo, these are all things that really definite the progression in extraction shooters and if Marathon doesn't have these then it's gonna turn out a lot more like Apex Legends than it is Tarkov.
If they do little puzzles and lore Easter eggs in the same way CoD zombies did a decade ago, it’ll be kino der toten.
(139.58 KB 392x382 1706322725766499.png)

>>1154104 >do they seriously think No, I don't think so.
Actually, this game is too spooky. I’m not playing it anymore. https://youtube.com/watch?v=Gx8PJbzlGbs
