Luanti thread Anonymous 12/13/2024 (Fri) 18:40:45 Id: a1d2d0 No. 1050353
I'm afraid to make a Luanti thread because the game is much better than Minecraft. It's the definitive block building video game. (popularity is not a measure of quality). I'm afraid to make a thread and advertise it's existence for fear of it becoming too popular (normalfags ruin everything). I'm going to make 1 thread about it (per imageboard) and that's it because the userbase is a bit TOO small for my taste and this game could use a bit more players. >How is Luanti better than Minecraft -it is a self contained and simple application. The audio always works, the game always runs reliably. -simple and intuitive Linux and Windows support -it is a convenient platform for mods. This is a big deal. Mods are a 1 click install. There's been times where I didn't like something about the base game so I immediately went and downloaded a mod and the problem was fixed in 5 minutes. -Open source for maximum customizability -every aspect of this game is free as in costs no money. -no corporate faggotry overlordom from micro$oft -Online play is simple and intuitive

>>1083915 bring back the /int/ board None of you anons want to work together on a collaborative Luanti mod? We could add a lot of stuff since the game uses Lua as a base so it shouldn't be too hard to pick it up and all mods have clear license so taking stuff from other mods is not problematic as long shit is properly attributed.
>>1050353 >>I'm afraid to make a Luanti thread because the game is much better than Minecraft. >going through multiple inter-twined caves >accidentally break a block next to an ocean while going up >server dies
>>1084857 >be playing the game >see seaweed >game crashes >reload >ERROR YOU SAW SEAWEED AND THE GAME WILL CRASH NOW >40 hours lost forever

>>1084857 Killing servers is a feature. A killer feature.
Everything in Luanti is done through Lua scripting, right? Do you think the engine should create a proper API for things like mobs? So many games have really janky mechanics due to a shaky foundation of user-made script implementations.
>>1084932 >proper API for things like mobs? Probably. Mobs seem to be the biggest complaint for most people.
>>1084913 CAAAAAAAAAAARLOS
Not gonna play again until they fix the mob AI

>>1093420 What's wrong with the mobs? >>1084411 Well shit looks like I am alone then. Whatever, I will try to think of something to add new content to my mod then. I need to figure out the stupid issue that my weapons are angled 45 degrees downwards which is stupid, with the recent support of GLTF format maybe I can just add a bone and just rotate it and fix it that way through code. So once I fixed the fucking weapons I will add more guns and ammo. Then I need to look into rebalancing the Saline Crystalizer, maybe ditch this block and replace it with ore seeds which grows into a crystal that drops seeds and ores which needs to be manually planted, for more chore work to get virtually infinitely amount of ores. I am kinda lost what kind of direction I should take for my mod, the base game of Minetest doesn't provide much so I dunno what else I should expand. I guess I could convert my mod back to Voxelibre since it aims to be a FOSS clone of Minecraft instead of Minetest game which is barebones as shit without any mods. If anybody has any ideas what I should add for the mod I can listen to it.
>>1094542 does voxelibre implement mobs in the engine or do they just use the same hacky method of minetest luanti?
>>1097985 No idea. The mobs work as they should? I mean there are zombies that bites you, roam around, skeletons that shoots arrows and creeper that fucks your shit up. I disabled hostile mobs on my world because I don't want to be constantly harassed while I am trying to figure out things.
>>1050353 Is this just a building game or are there bosses to kill and stuff like that like Ender Dragon etc.?
>>1050353 Wow I haven't seen this in a long time. Glad to see it improving. It looks competitive with Minecraft now.
>>1098292 It is technically not a game, but a voxel game engine where they expect the user to build the game with the lua modding API. Several minecraft "clones" have been made for it, and a few offshoots are totally different, and there are quite a few mods people have made just for the minecraft clone games to expand upon it like early tekkit.
>>1094542 I would help dude but I'm way to busy day to day. Maybe I could look at some code or something if you need help with something like that.
any good packs for a newfag? I tried voxelthing once
>>1099261 alright I guess I will just bitch later when I get stuck with something in this thread. Right now I am trying to solve the issue where my weapons don't fire since I ported my mod from Minetest Game back to Voxelibre, though I think I can solve it by looking at the bow code and see the difference myself.
>>1050353 Tell me about this game, how does it play?
>>1100912 Like minecraft but taller.
>>1094542 The mobs are just homeing. And can see through walls
>>1106999 (checked) Well I guess maybe it's a lack of the Luanti engine feature where it's missing LOS API stuff to make mobs not be able to see through walls. No idea, I can't get any info right now on their fucking shitcord because the people there refuse to respond to my questions.
>refugees learning about Luanti Neat, maybe they'll bring it back with them whenever 4meme goes back online. >>1100912 Well Luanti isn't a game, it's an engine. The main game people play on it is VoxeLibre, which plays shockingly close to Minecraft. Your brain stops forgetting it isn't Minecraft after awhile. It's completely free relatively lightweight, give it a try. That said it's extremely janky, due to the game having no actual mob API. Everything is done via lua scripting.
>>1112530 What version of Minecraft is Voxlibre similar to? I fucking hate nuMinecraft. It's a shitty RPG grind that lost its soul.
>>1116442 It doesn't target any version, they have an explanation on the Luanti DB page. They never added Phantoms, for example. And they have a bunch of features Minecraft doesn't have, like automaps and stone compression.
>>1112308 I had a sneaking suspicion that the name change meant that it had been co-opted by discordfags, but you just confirmed it
Unfortunately Minetest is a horrendous engine that is bad at its very core. No amount of polishing this turd will ever made it good. It's rotten.
>>1050353 Oh, that's Minetest. Did they make a finished survival mode?
>>1112308 >>1122286 >game got taken over by Discord shits hoo boy
>>1129941 I don't think it's that it got taken over by discord fags, but rather that everyone has migrated to discord for everything, and everyone seems to be a fag on discord by default. >>1129918 the modders have made several clones of mc survival mode, although last I checked they were not at parity with features
>>1050353 i like that mods don't break after versions. you'll find mods from 10 years ago, completely untouched through versions, that are drag and drop. mods in general are more user friendly. you don't need modpacks to join a modded server, it just uploads the files for you. or they are mostly server side, i can't tell. it is pretty seamless. setting up a server for my friends with the mineclone modpack and a 'pirate' music mod with the minecraft ost was reasonably convincing

>>1081555 The thing is, and I forget if it was VL or Mineclonia, every time I constructed a portal it popped me out smack in the middle of a lava ocean, forcing me to build a bridge. The nether generation is just plain awful. This forest never ended ... until I got to the green forest. Then that never ended. >>1094542 I remember mobs spawning in a stack, anywhere with sufficiently low light. Anywhere. Having six skeletons spawn right in front of you is a bad time. Maybe that's been fixed.
>>1165268 oh yeah the nether terrain is god awful and because of the wonkiness of mobs I kept getting wrecked by hoglins spawning 5 blocks away from me, like it just didn't check distance to player for valid spawn location and the fact that you can only see where there is copious amounts of lava doesn't help, but that's because the nether isn't a different dimension, it's still the overworld just very very far down so you don't get that enhanced visibility that minecraft has
>>1165268 >textures created by the aesthetically challenged >no mipmapping >no renderfog to hide chunk boundaries it's just so ugly and amateurish
>>1166354 Yeah I just downloaded it to test it out. I was surprised to spawn next to an illager base. I tried raiding it. The game runs fine but the gameplay needs more polish. illagers shooting at me when I'm behind cover. Biggest problem IS THE FOOD SYSTEM. They ported one of the worst aspects of minecraft. It looks like it depleted only when damaged, but now you're capped to ~6 hearts unless you eat more food? I hate the system. Hunger should heal you as long as you have the meter partially full.
*playing voxel libre BTW. Let me know if there are better games.
>>1165268 The Nether is terrible in both versions, probably because they're both using the same mod somebody threw together. It's one of those things I assume will be improved down the line. >>1165631 >but that's because the nether isn't a different dimension, it's still the overworld just very very far down Yeah, they're on the same worldmap, that's why there's no loading screen when entering the Nether. I think it's -32000 blocks down. >>1166354 While I enjoy the games, they're definitely FOSSjank. The engine has seen a huge surge in recently, so I can only hope they'll try to improve things. You should try some of the other stuff on the engine, people have made weird stuff in Luanti.
