General Purpose 8chan Sitewide Meta Thread Anonymous Board owner 05/12/2022 (Thu) 02:37:48 Id: 9b4131 No. 5423
This cyclical thread is for all of the following: Bug Reports General Help 8chan Tech Support Board Migrations Suggestions and Feature Requests Global Site Announcements Transparency Reports General Site Meta Discussion Summoning the Admins Specific meta threads on this board and elsewhere are deprecated. If something is really important or urgent it may get its own sticky, otherwise post in here.
>>10007 >Have you reported it? A couple of times, yeah. And then I left a post to check the overboard in /v/ meta thread which got deleted.
>>10008 Yeah, Mark has been pretty trigger happy for the last couple months now. I made /bv/ just to finish posting about what he was banning on /v/ and /vb/ and now it exists as place to safely comment on whatever retardation he has going on without shitting up /site/ or being drowned out on /b/, or dragging the mess to ziggerchan. But I do think it's necessary to bring up some things, mostly already brought up by others, on /site/ when he does the same things he's doing on /v/ on /site/, and when his constant post editing is actually exacerbating a bug that effects the average user.
>>10007 Yeah, I agree. Something needs to be done if those boards aren't removing said content. How active have they been about removing CP anyway? Are globals the only ones removing it? If so then that's a problem.
>>10010 Just get cake off the homepage, problem solved. Zoophilia too.
>>10010 The thing is CP spammers tend to strike when they know there's no one to cover the board, so in general globals tend to catch most of it from most boards anyway, unless it's a super active board like /v/ or /hisparefugio/
>>10013 /delicious/ and /b/ are in the top boards. They need local supervision much more than the dozens of dead boards that get 1 post a day. I reluctantly oversaw /b/ for a time since no one bothered to un-vol me and there's no option to unvol myself, but I stopped when someone else other than Codexx finally took over the board.
>>10014 Speaking of, a good moderation feature for the globals is an overboard/latest posts dedicated to boards that have had very little average activity for long periods of time.

For Codexx, we present this flag of Lain.
>>10004 >The top boards list is for TOP boards. I am not talking about the site board. I'm talking about the section at the top of every single board on the site that is under the control of the board owner and can be altered however he so pleases. In the picture attached to this posts, you see what that section looks like for /v/. Up until today, /a/ used to be listed between /co/ and /wsj/. It was gone this morning, with the only remnant of it being the extra comma. So I asked Mark, in the /v/ meta thread, why it is that he removed /a/ from a section of the site that he specifically and exclusively has control over. And that post was deleted. What does this have to do with site metrics or board popularity? Have since reloaded the page, it looks like it has since been re-added, but the extra comma remains, and most posts are still deleted.
>>10017 I am indeed a jackass and misunderstood the question because there's multiple lists of boards across the top of the board that can include /co/ and /a/. I am now in full agreement, Mark is a fucking dickweed if he deleted your post asking why he took /a/ off the related/friend board list. I have a tab open right now where I can see that it is gone. My guess is he is trying to fix whatever he's fucked up that made some commas red while some commas are part of the board links, and his super moderator autism has simply decided to shotgun delete any posts at random that talk about anything meta. Most likely, he, a second time, deleted something he saw as "meta" without realizing it was in the meta thread because he doesn't check that shit and just regularly deletes posts from the latest posts page. Granting that this is a dick move, it's still not a /site/ topic, just a /v/ meta topic. So I invite you to discuss it on /bv/ where Mark can't fondle your posts, since he can and has done so to posts here.
>>10017 >>10018 This is the most blatant shilling I've ever seen. Kill yourselves.
>>10019 Oh hai Mark :^)
>>10020 >everyone I don't like is Mark This is why this site is dead.
>>10001 Who gives a shit? It's already restored anyway.
>>10021 >What is :^) >>10022 Anon's post is still deleted. Being unable to ask even innocuous questions in the meta thread is an issue.
>>10022 >Who gives a shit? People with no life who are too stupid to evade bans.
>>10024 And also gay people, a venn diagram of both with users of /v/ is just a circle.
>>10025 There's a reason they're called /v/ermin by every other board since time immemorial.
Um... what's going on? All I see is stuff like "Mark isn't acting like himself today..."
>>10027 All I'm waiting for is someone to claim /sm/ since shotakot won't anymore.
>>10028 You can make an account and send an email to codexx to verify it, and after that you can claim /sm/ and become its new BO.
>>10028 Has he specifically said thet he wont or do you mean he just abandoned and won't come back?
>>10026 I've only seen the most sycophantic smugfags call /v/ users /v/ermin. >>10017 Weird.
>>10033 It's the whole last three threads, for the last couple years. >>>/delicious/54156 And before that, the BO and vols thought it was a good idea to allow links to globally banned content. And /delicious/ is abandoned again. The whole thing is just totally neglected. CP could be slipped in among the noise and no one would notice because no one is watching.
>>10005 I've emailed the siteadmin account.
>>10033 >>10034 >>10035 Individually report the offending posts.
>>10037 >Go spend a couple hours filling out several hundred captchas for over two years of posts No. That is not my responsibility. I've made the site staff well aware of the issue and that it is more than one post.
>>10028 The reason why is because imhentai.xxx recently got "You can't view everything unless you're logged in" syndrome, just like Newgrounds did 3 years ago.
Any updates on the .se domain?
>>10036 Yo, it's been over a week. How many times a month is the site email checked?
Who did Mark piss of today that caused the bypass limit to kick in?
>>10089 I haven't seen anything today. However I can't post files now that I can finally post. Connect failed every time.
>Creation of new bypasses is currently disabled. This is so annoying. Especially when it's off for more than one day. I wish you guys FINALLY implemented a board-level solution. It's unfair that everyone has to suffer because of a single board.
(11.68 KB 526x493 404 Not Found.png)

Codexx, Acid, is the "404 Not Found Guru Meditation" issue going to be eventually addressed? Because in the meantime, as already mentioned, you can't access 8chan.moe from a number of public VPNs, Tor exit nodes, a few countries, and random European locations (not limited to one country), which other anons personally reported to me. You get the "Guru Meditation" message instead. Are these drastic measures even necessary today? A lot of the time, bypass creation is already disabled.

I'm new (lurked since October), how do we deal with this. I can't think of what to write that won't be misconstrued by whatever followed the 4chan over here.
>>10093 You somehow filtered everyone on /v/. So uh, yeah you're doing it right tbh.
>>10092 Either a frontned is misconfigured or our IP lists are outdated. I will see if we can update them.
>>10093 What is your goal with filters? Are you filtering common cuckchan phrases or something?
>>9951 Nigger, you're on a corpse of a website whose biggest fit of activity is a mexican bunker board with a whopping 11 posts per hour. Why would this even be an idea? Somehow people are so stupid, including the administration, they think making it even LESS likely to get more users and maintain the current base is a good thing. If cripple had this mindset, the original 8chan would have never gotten off the ground. Every time I check back in, the site is deader than last time and all I see is "how can we make things worse?" This time I see Mark being even more of a power tripping cunt than before, and even dumber proposals. Maybe a few more rules to cuck the place harder than modern 4chan? Oh, I know, ban all VPNs and TOR, implement a 15 minute timer for first time posters (cookie-dependent), and sell 8moe passes!
>>10097 >not wanting the entire site to be locked down every time mark pisses off some sperg is rule cucking You might want to work on that reading comprehension there retard.

I keep waiting for a good pause to fit this post in here, but we can't seem to find one so fuck it. I'm going to give everyone the short version. I need to cover multiple separate, but interconnected issues. First, the AI Porn Bans and loli Beginning on January 1st, several countries and US States had laws go into effect concerning AI generated porn. Think like the law currently being debated in Texas, except there's already 12 States that passed it, and many, many countries. This snuck up on us, as it wasn't widely reported in any free-speech channels and we never saw much protest or other dust kicked up that would draw attention to it. Most of these laws are surface aimed at Deepfake images used for harassment purposes, but several, like the one in Texas, also pose a serious threat to the existence of *any and all* fictional content that so much as resembles a minor. The retardation that we saw years ago in Australia went International, and nobody was the wiser until it was already in effect all over. That is why we temporarily lost the .se domain. The host contacted us and and notified us that to comply with Norway's version of the law they couldn't service us any longer. After four very comfy years. To their credit, they were nice about it and communicated with us. It was then when we went in search of replacements that we discovered how widespread the new 2025 laws really are, and it shocked us. tl;dr a bunch of feel-good bans on AI art got passed around the world 2 months ago, and several are also written to ban loli art in places where it was previously legal. >Resolution: We do have a new server for .se coming online. It just took time and a lot of work to find one. We were well underway setting this up when a new problem arose. The Pedonigger Attack The site is currently in the process of being Esthered. For those who don't remember that event, some unknown person using the handle "Esther M. Aronowitz" spent time hunting down 8chan splinter sites in 2020, badgering registrars and hosting companies with alarmist reports to get them to drop service. It happened to us once, and to sites on the webring too. Only this time the attacker has taken a more active role. The reason why PNG files and GIFs are disabled at the moment is because he spent time creating animated images that contained CP buried several seconds deep in the animation frames, and then seeded them in dead threads and slow boards all around the site. He then waited several hours before linking those files in Esther-type reports to the hosts and registrars. We've removed them immediately each time but it still poses a risk. Its an ongoing battle and we're looking into a better technical solution. IN THE MEANTIME, DON'T HESITATE TO GLOBALLY REPORT ANY UNUSUAL FILES. You guys are very good about reporting that shit when you stumble across it, and always have been. But this faggot is hiding the shit so that it won't be noticed even on a cursory check by a user or even a mod. Anyone whos bored and wants to help out can poke around old threads across the site and just see if you bump into one. Report it and we'll take care of it immediately. If you have the free time, help us take a closer look. We're staying in contact with the hosts and registrars and have explained the situation in detail, but the more we can do to clean the shit up faster, the better off we'll be until a better solution is ready. Stephen Lynx is assisting us too, so it shouldn't take too long to get implemented.

>>10103 >Beginning on January 1st, several countries and US States had laws go into effect concerning AI generated porn. Think like the law currently being debated in Texas, except there's already 12 States that passed it, and many, many countries. Its an ongoing battle and we're looking into a better technical solution. So that's what's kept you guys busy over the past few months?
>>10105 Bingo. We didn't wanna say anything until we had it figured out and a roadmap we could present. The problem is these laws are super new, mostly foreign languages, untested in courts and enforcement, and theres no place that even has a handy list compiled of what is banned where yet. Its a clusterfuck.
>>10106 >We didn't wanna say anything until we had it figured out and a roadmap we could present. Given that more eyes helps mitigate the issue, just as you are now calling for anons to help survey dead boards, I think waiting a couple months to tell anons about the Esther issue might not have been the most efficient move. Also, can you answer me here? >>10005 about >>>/loli/7688 I've tried all three methods I know of contacting you.
>>10106 Also, a bandaid suggestion for this situation that I've brought up before. >>10015
>>10106 Another suggestion to mitigate the issue. Lock boards that are both dead and abandoned, and put up a much bigger "up for claims" sign on them. If they're not being used anyways, they just present a moderation vulnerability.
>>10103 >But this faggot is hiding the shit so that it won't be noticed even on a cursory check by a user or even a mod. >We're staying in contact with the hosts and registrars and have explained the situation in detail How about giving them every IP address these images are posted from and telling them to pursue legal action against whomever they can find that used them? And also ACTUALLY permanently banning them from ever posting here again?
Can you delete an entire board and its Archive.org? if the BO decides to refuse to be BO and delete content. I wrote you an email.
>>10110 Because most of those are VPNs or Tor, stupid.
>>10103 Wouldn't it make sense to make all uploaded PNGs and GIFs static, at least as a temporary measure?
>>10103 >animated images >PNG and GIF Are you sure there can't be animated JPEGs? The timing of the bills and the spam wave is also suspect, like some spook(s) are angry that the former 8chan's poster-base are still still active and anonymous as ever.
>>10114 Hiding the issue does not aid global moderation, hence it does not aid you.

>>10115 Testing animated webp
>>10117 >the other webp of Kyle's animation from Hotel Dusk bigger than 220px didn't upload <the other webp did Turn off webp while you're at it.
>>10103 Is the creation/use of these pedo images automated? Or does it seem manual?
>>10103 which 12 states?
>>10119 Manual. >>10120 Kentucky, California, Oklahoma, Oregon, Illinois, Iowa, Nevada, and the rest were up northeast. Typical mix of libshit and boomercon states. Texas is in the news because theirs is the most explicit about going after all fictional works, but nearly all of them have the potential to. Most of the international ones are closer to Texas, like what happened in Norway. >>10109 Already suggested and being considered. >>10108 Working on exactly that. >>10117 Noted. Thank you!
>>10103 >he's hiding CP in animation frames How slimy and gay. Anyways, why did it take this long to update on the domain situation?
>>10122 I wanted to do a big site meta update explaining what happened and announcing the new .se network. It wasn't supposed to take this long, but shit kept getting in the way and then the pedo attacks started.
>>10103 >Think like the law currently being debated in Texas Passed and sent to the governor to be signed.
>>10123 >announcing the new .se network If this is what I think it is, that would be nice. Reportedly, the .moe domain is blocked in France because of lolicon content. We need more anons to be able to access the site.
>>10121 If those states already had such laws passed long ago, is there really much of a threat posed by the potential Texas legislation? I am willing to bet those laws were moreso created to deal with deepfake type shit rather than any traditionally-created loli or anime porn. Yes, the sword of Damocles hangs above the heads if some attorney out there bothers to stir up a case for it, but that's been the case for a while. Not to mention, have there been any successful court cases in the past 20 years where specifically anime + loli porn has been considered unlawful? Not just the cases where, oh it's some pedo who had anime and loli art BUT he also had legit traditional CP saved, sort of thing.
>>10113 So. What. >>10115 There can't be animated JPEGs, but there CAN be steganographic images hidden completely inside other images, so I urge the site owner to be even more paranoid and start looking at suspicious JPEG file sizes.
>>10126 >is there really much of a threat posed by the potential Texas legislation? Yes. >I am willing to bet those laws were moreso created to deal with deepfake type shit rather than any traditionally-created loli or anime porn. You'd be wrong. Please read the bill. >A person commits an offense if the person knowingly possesses, accesses with intent to view, or promotes obscene visual material containing a depiction that appears to be of a child younger than 18 years of age engaging in activities described by Section 43.21(a)(1)(B), regardless of whether the depiction is an image of an actual child, a cartoon or animation, or an image created using an artificial intelligence application or other computer software. https://legiscan.com/TX/text/SB20/id/3171915
>>10124 >Passed and sent to the governor to be signed. Turns out this is incorrect. The bill has only passed the Senate, it still has to pass the House, where it could be amended. Niche Gamer reported this incorrectly.
>>10126 >>10134 There is, at most, a temporary threat in Texas. Past First Amendment precedent is strong on this subject, and even the most cucked/boomerfied Supreme Court justices wouldn't overrule it without creating a whole host of problems, as well as weakening their own influence.
>>10125 France only blocks via DNS so it's basically useless.
>>10121 >Most of the international ones are closer to Texas, like what happened in Norway. Wasn't Norway the way that had the government outright refuse to previously enact an anti-loli precisely because there's no evidence linking it to any crimes ever being committed?
>>10136 But, anon, someone would have to actually be charged and then sue in order for the law to be struck down. Until then, it will have a chilling effect. And even then, the legislature can go back and slightly narrow the law, and then the process starts all over again.
Why was /zoo/ issued with a takedown? Some transparency would be nice
>>10128 >So. What. So, this site is dead in the water if you ban VPNs and tor like cuckchan does. It doesn't have a big enough base of good goys ready to bareback it and get internet STDs. >There can't be animated JPEGs, but there CAN be steganographic images hidden completely inside other images, so I urge the site owner to be even more paranoid and start looking at suspicious JPEG file sizes. Not an issue because unlike animations, they're not immediately visible and thus actionable to registrars and other upstream providers. Gifs and videos work for an attack like this because all Esther has to do is link them and have the upstream provider watch them. The goal here isn't to get away with sharing illegal material, as there's much less annoying ways to do that, the goal is to get the site shut down. >>10121 >Typical mix of libshit and boomercon states Is there a third kind of USA state? >>10138 No, that was Denmark. https://archive.fo/qejpJ
>>10140 Some kind of new law
>>10142 >they're not immediately visible and thus actionable to registrars and other upstream providers. Go ahead. Explain to everyone how a ZIP of Democrat activism isn't "actionable to registrars" simply because it's "not immediately visible." It's the same goddamned thing, anon. We have to find this guy IRL and take care of him permanently. It's cat and mouse otherwise and the site will already be dead.
>>10139 No, they don't. Standing and ripeness in a case like this is self-evident because of the nature of Free Speech cases. The legislature can keep trying but it will end up toothless by the end of it. Arkansas tried something like this 1-2 years ago and a federal court rightly struck the law down iirc.
A top board winds up being collateral damage from the goddamn pedos, I am pissed.
>>10144 >Explain to everyone how a ZIP of Democrat activism isn't "actionable to registrars" I never said a zip file wasn't. A zip file is known to have something hidden inside it by design, and attracts more attention. A jpeg does not normally, and chances are the person you're claiming a jpeg has hidden CP to is too tech illiterate to look inside it.
>>10145 Judges don't strike down laws unless someone actually sues. >Standing and ripeness in a case like this is self-evident because of the nature of Free Speech cases. It still produces a chilling effect because no one wants to risk even getting charged with something like that. >The legislature can keep trying but it will end up toothless by the end of it. This part is probably true. But how many years go by before they pass something that's actually toothless? >Arkansas tried something like this 1-2 years ago and a federal court rightly struck the law down iirc. I looked it up, but I can't find anything on this.
So where are we trying to move /zoo/ to? And is there a clear explanation why the removal of /zoo/ is happening?
>Childfuckers vs dogfuckers Lmao. Not a gillion years did I think the dogfuckers would lose.
>>10149 Find yourselves an .onion board or something
>>10103 It's a wonder they are so paranoid about sites like this one. I mean what actually happens here? It's basically just 'general chat and shitposting' and that's it. Nothing is ever organized. There's no activism, no one's recruiting for a cult or anything like that, not even any meet-ups - unless it's something like Mark saying "Hey come and join me for some cake". Certainly no one is organizing political activism that's then 'taken to the streets' or played out IRL, with real world consequences. What would actually happen if they left the site alone? Basically nothing, anons would just continue chatting and shitposting. It's all in their heads - that the site is some great bogeyman - it's all in their heads.
>>10146 They are literal zoophiles, you fucking retard. Fuck you for advocating for them.
>>10121 Hi Acid >>10112 >Can you delete an entire board and its Archive.org? if the BO decides to refuse to be BO and delete content.

>>10123 There are going to be some more toss-ups and shifts in the cultural zeitgeist surrounding the current American administration, and the powers that be which intend to uphold it, and to change it. This site may come under the crossfires until that gets resolved. For that, I wish you didn't need to expend any extra energy or incur any undue stress to maintain the site; however, I will beg that you do your best to keep the site running. I'll be hoping to put some information down regarding some of the situation in right-wing circles later, I don't think I'd be appreciated very much if I posted it on xitter or some other shithole. Your site is the only one which provides this level of free speech to me. Keep up the good work. God bless.

>>10171 We always do our best anon. Such as tonight. I'm happy to announce that the Esther issue appears to be resolving, as both the hosts and registrars understand what is going on. We've shown them a lot of evidence of the pedo attack being a deliberate act to try and deplatform us, and they get it. Additionally, that pause allowed us to bring the new .se network online. https://8chan.se So we once again have our mirror domain available. It'll be a little sluggish since the cache is cold, and still needs the usual tweaking for DDoS filters and such, but feel free to bookmark it again.

In the year of 2025, it's extremely hard to imagine a situation when a Western registrar gives in to the whims of the Russian government. Another thing is, when you legally run an imageboard (or any site for that matter), it's none of your business what happens to unrelated Russian sites because of a moronic Russian agency. Acid said Esther waits a few hours after making a post, so I would probably not catch any posts he makes before he then reports them upstream. Hopefully they will be unlocked when the other course of action I and others suggested, an overboard/latest posts function that specifically targets any board with a low enough amount of activity.

The blocks must remain. >>10213 ROZKOMNUTSACK didn't threaten us. We'd have told them to pound sand. They threatened a T2 network provider that was literally keeping our entire network alive. The Russians told them "either you force 8moe to remove all this content we don't like, or we'll ban your entire network in Russia." That network consisted of entire datacenters and shit, so the provider caved and told us to delete half the site. We actually started to comply to buy time, but because we literally didn't do it fast enough the Russians threatened them again and they just up and pulled our plug without notice. It was the closest we've ever been to losing this site entirely. When we managed to recover we blocked Russia and never looked back.
Yesterday, I took the step to lock all boards below 500 threads and which had 0 PPH in the evening. Obviously, some boards people use have been impacted, and there may also be some "dead" boards being targeted that had enough posts or activity to avoid being locked. If you own a board that was locked and you would like it to be unlocked, please post here or e-mail me at codexx (at) cock (dot) li and I will unlock any board that is not abandoned. If a board if abandoned and you would like it reopened, you may claim the board and I will unlock it. If you own a board, please make the effort to check it regularly. Obviously small boards cannot have 24/7 moderation, and the globals will help, but if a board is effectively unmoderated and people are posting illegal content there, we will try to reach out to the BO and work with them. If they are unresponsive, the board will be locked until we can speak with them. It's very easy for posts on small boards to go unreported due to the lack of traffic. Generally posts on larger boards get noticed quickly. As always, thank you to everyone who files reports. You help keep the site up.

Banning PNGs is over the top. There are less disruptive alternatives. If you're worried about report-trolling, just block off-site referrals/visitation to media files. In nginx you'd do it like this: location ~ .(bmp|gif|jpe?g|mp3|mp4|ogg|png|txt|webm|webp)$ { valid_referers blocked server_names *.8chan.moe; if ($invalid_referer) { return 403; } } You can block off-site referrals/visitation to threads too. location ~ ^/[^/]+/(res|last)/[0-9]+\.html$ { valid_referers blocked server_names *.8chan.moe; if ($invalid_referer) { return 403; } } Whatever you're using instead of nginx, just ask deepseek or copilot to give you the equivalent. You can also ban all VPNs ( https://github.com/X4BNet/lists_vpn/blob/main/output/datacenter/ipv4.txt ) and Tor ( https://www.dan.me.uk/dnsbl ) from uploading files. VPN/Tor users would complain, but it's far less disruptive than banning PNGs and GIFs site-wide.

Solution: Ban only VPNs and Tor users from uploading PNGs and GIFs. There's no need to ban everyone from being able to upload them. Again, lists are available here: https://github.com/X4BNet/lists_vpn/blob/main/output/datacenter/ipv4.txt Raw: https://github.com/X4BNet/lists_vpn/raw/refs/heads/main/output/datacenter/ipv4.txt https://www.dan.me.uk/dnsbl Raw: torexit.dan.me.uk For the Tor DNSBL you'll probably need https://www.npmjs.com/package/dnsbl For the VPN IP CIDR ranges, ask deepseek or copilot to convert them into a JSON file or whatever's convenient to interface with lynxchan.

Finally.
HOORAY! A BUG FIX Previously I complained about an ID selection bug: you cannot click and unclick IDs because the functionality is broken/unfinished. I actually got around and fixed it myself! The code changes the label.onclick function in .static/js/posting.js, lines 268 to 291. label.onclick = function() { var index = posting.highLightedIds.indexOf(id); window.location.hash = '_'; if (index > -1) { posting.highLightedIds.splice(index, 1); var updateCell = C => C.classList.remove("markedPost"); } else { posting.highLightedIds.push(id); var updateCell = C => C.classList.add("markedPost"); index = posting.highLightedIds.indexOf(id); } for (var i = 0; i < array.length; i++) { var cellToChange = array[i]; if (cellToChange.className === 'innerOP') { continue; } if (index > -1) { updateCell(cellToChange); } } }; That's it. Now I ask codexx to update the old code. As a matter of fact, I have other suggestions in mind and I will be sharing them soon, some with ready solutions.
I also think that this leftover line in >>10424 is unnecessary (can't edit the post) >window.location.hash = '_';
>>10422 A very kind gesture, but you can't transfer boards to users who don't have a verified account (from the start) and that's exactly the problem for several of us who have been waiting for verification for months.

ANOTHER BUG FIX Problem: quoting multiple lines doesn't work properly. When you select multiple paragraphs with your mouse and click on the post number, only the first two lines get quoted. This is not how it's supposed to work. The bug is actually easy to fix. The new code (I borrowed it from 4chan) replaces line 63 in /.static/js/qr.js Old code: quoteString += '>' + selectedText.toString().replace('\n', '\n>') + '\n'; New code: quoteString += '>' + selectedText.toString().trim().replace(/[\r\n]+/g,'\n>') + '\n'; Again, I ask Codexx to update the old code.

I haven't actually done my due diligence (the devs having a Bluesky might be a red flag), but it actually seems perfect for 8moe's use cases and might ail the administration's woes considering all the DDOSing and AI scraping going about these days. >Anubis weighs the soul of your connection using a sha256 proof-of-work challenge in order to protect upstream resources from scraper bots. >Installing and using this will likely result in your website not being indexed by some search engines. This is considered a feature of Anubis, not a bug. >This is a bit of a nuclear response, but AI scraper bots scraping so aggressively have forced my hand. I hate that I have to do this, but this is what we get for the modern Internet because bots don't conform to standards like robots.txt, even when they claim to. >In most cases, you should not need this and can probably get by using Cloudflare to protect a given origin. However, for circumstances where you can't or won't use Cloudflare, Anubis is there for you. This is uncannily fine-tuned for 8moe.

TWO THINGS that have been bugging me since day one but seems like no one really cares about: >R9K files Could you guys alter the error message so that it links to the post that "already" contains the supposed file that's "already" been posted? >Hyperlinks Could you provide BOs and option in the board control panel to disable hyperlinks?
>>10456 You wanna disable hyperlinks ENTIRELY on /pol/? Thats not a good idea man. Why?
>>10457 >Thats not a good idea man. Why? The first part has to do with the fact that hyperlinks are used for site metrics. Even /v/ knows about this, which is why they break links when it comes to companies releasing surveys. Second part has to do with the fact that it deters spamming attempts, which still happens on occasion. Having to physically copy and paste a link adds another step to the process than just clicking on a link and being sent who-knows-where. And third is that it's a feature /pol/ used to have enabled by default, which means it's a feature that did have a reason and purpose for existing. So it no longer being there doesn't make much sense.
>>10458 >deters spamming attempts linkspam tends to have links already broken up these days in anticipation of this.

>>10530 It's a collision as a result of how Lynxchan counts posts. This is the third time I've seen it happen on this site.
>>10530 >>10532 >>10533 I've noted it and can probably reproduce it but I think the fix is gonna take a bit. Especially with other stuff going on. The good news is that it's (mostly) harmless.
Is this where I can mention that the feedback button at the footer doesn't direct you to a real thread?
Someone complained in the /v/ drawthread about oekak. "Lost a several hours oekaki because of idiocy and also beause the export button is broken"
>>10536 that was me. I remember that in other places the export function should open a "save as" window. Here that doesn't happen.
>>10536 >>10537 Shit, that's a pain. I'll add it to the issues list. I may be somewhat overwhelmed for the near future. If anyone has JavaScript experience and would like to volunteer to help handle frontend work, I could definitely use the help.
/a/ BO here, how do I add someone as a volunteer?
>>10540 They need to make an 8moe user acct and you can add them by username in the BO menu under Volunteers.
>tfw it's been years and you still must either use TOR or use Redchannit clearnet mirror to access the site at all if you're from some certain countries(Russia for example) What gives? And is 8moe going to fix it finally now that halfchan is kill and may end up staying dead for a relatively long time?
>>10542 I'll talk to Acid about it. Probably no changes until we make sure the new hardware is stable. So far so good, but we'll give it a couple days before tinkering with the routing and blocks.
>>10543 I really hope so. I'd be delighted to finally come back home after missing since OG 8ch went out with a bang. God, I miss 8/v/ and 8/v/ anons a ton! Hopefully the solution will end up being something simple.
>>10544 To clarify, Russia was banned because they tried to deplatform us. We've discussed unbanning them before. Some countries are banned because we receive a lot of cybersecurity threats from them and it's easier to just IP range ban the entire country and let anons hit with a false positive use a VPN. China and Israel fall into this category. A couple countries are just blocked out of an abundance of caution over local laws, but we can probably compromise on those if we look into things more. Or at least make the blocks more targeted to specific boards.
>>5423 I think Host-dono should add an option for board reports to include the title of the thread (that contains the reported post). With large and broad boards such as /v/ideo games and /vyt/ (vtubers), it's almost impossible to know everything and this would assist with clean up speed
>>10529 I hope you're ready, this is only the first drop in the bucket. >>>/v/1095334

Mark is going on a strange deletion spree. His account may have been compromised.

We're over 20,000 concurrent users today, and its still rising. The system's handling it, but we'll be ready to add even more server beef if the errors start happening.
Inline replies are bugged, clicking on a link once will work just fine, but clicking on it for a second time >won't hide the post again if the quoted post is from the same thread, or >will duplicate the quoted post if it's a cross-thread link. ACID/CODEXX is there a way to recover a thread that's pushed off a board? An anon on /v/ wanted to archive the old TES thread but 4/v/'s general posting pushed it off the board before he realized it. Related to this can BO's get an option to protect threads from being bumped off? Basically like pinning a thread but without moving it to the front page? That would be SUPER helpful right now.

Old threads eventually slipping off the catalog are just a thing that happens. Since we upgraded the main server last year we could try enabling thread archiving natively. The drives have some space. But if we stay this large for a year shit will fill up. Anyway, updates. Today we officially hit an all time peak of 24000 concurrent users, 14,000 active posters, literally over 9000 posts per hour, and more than half a million lurker hits. Sweet mother of fuck. We started capping out on the frontend network again this evening which is why thread updates began to gently break, so I spun up yet another network node and plugged it in. Now we're comfy, and another 3000-4000 people could show up before it starts stressing things again. WELCOME TO 8CHAN!
>>10622 Is everyone able to handle it? My board's gains have been relatively modest so I still have it under control, but I wonder how the big boards approaching 1000 PPH are faring. In all my time on this site I've never seen anything like it.
>>10622 Can You unlock >>>/funkg/ ?
>>10624 That board is closed because it was abandoned by its owner and has no active volunteers. You can create an account and claim the board so we can unlock it.
>>10623 Its amazing, isn't it? I could gush for a bit. We never cared about competing with anybody, not even 8kun. It was all about our anons and the communities we lost. We just wanted to carry the torch and keep it alive, whether we had 20 users or 2000. We built this modular network not to try and scalp anybody's userbase, but to let us expand and contract around censorship and deplatforming because the net was going insane in 2021. The ability to expand it fast to take in new users was just a bonus that let us save the Hispas and a few others. But here we are. The unthinkable happened and 4chan went down, and suddenly we have tens of thousands of anons coming in out of the rain. And they're nice. Have you been around the communities? These guys aren't the schizo tranny dregs everyone dreaded when a random 4chan user would show up 3 years ago. They feel like our brothers and stepsisters from 8chan prime. We're having more fun than we've had in years just being shitposting faggots in our own right. It feels like a big family reunion, IMO. I'll be sad when or if it turns out to be fleeting, but right now I just wanna tell everyone to party hard. And the admin trio? Fuck I feel like a proud dad seeing my network system going to strong. Codexx feels the same about all the work he did to make the site software as good as it is and seeing new people really notice the difference. Its a magical feeling. I wouldn't have wanted to miss this week for the world.

(842.02 KB 1790x3330 8chan future network.png)

>>10633 Yeah. Lynxchan was an autism project designed to solve the "8chan prime problem" of >100k users. At the time there was no imageboard software in the world that could handle it on a single machine. To work around this, sites like 4chan and old 8chan had to pay thousands of dollars a month for multiple giant, full spec servers to split up the load. Lynxchan uses an *extremely* small, fast, efficient, scalable backend system that exposes the API to a separate frontend that handles just the UI/UX part. A buck naked lynxchan running on one full power server can do the work of six servers in a 4chan style setup. Lynxchan also uniquely allows the backend server to slave-rig other servers to it remotely, borrowing their processing power if the main box gets overwhelmed. This site is extra unique because we designed the network with similar scalability. To put it in perspective, .moe has one main server as a backend and then multiple frontend network "nodes" (a FE server, a DDoS guard, a caching proxy, and a traffic controller all bundled together and hardened). And these nodes can be installed on inexpensive VPS machine anywhere in the world in about 2 hours. The nodes talk to the main backend and also to eachother, spreading out server load dramatically, increasing speed, and securing the actual server kinda like how Cloudflare does. The network can support up to 64 nodes, but we're handling all of this traffic with just five.

I read that VPNs are allowed on this board, how does this work? Can I post from both my home IP and my VPN at the same time as long as I am not breaking any rules? Sometimes I have my VPN active in one device and not the other or sometimes I have my VPN up to read posts from places like Twitter because my ISP blocks twitter for some reason and I forget to turn it off before posting. This wasn't a problem in 4chan because 4chan blocks VPNs completely which served as a reminder to turn it off but I want to know if I'm safe using both at the same time or if I should just stick to one?
>>10725 Lmfao, nigger where the fuck do you think you are? Listen up fags, no one here cares about "breaking rules" or ban evasion, not even the admins. Being banned just means you pissed off some BO and got your posts deleted. Just change IP's and move on. No admin gives a fuck, and no BO who isn't a retard gives a fuck either. It's just a way of telling you to knock it off and slightly inconveniencing you.

In the abscense of an archive, I thought it would be a good idea to have a hall of fame board that contains the best threads on the site called >>>/vault/. Good threads that are approaching deletion would instead be moved to it for safekeeping and selection would be based on nomination and voting. I've spoken with Mark, who has made me aware of some technical limitations on the backend, and as an amateur C programmer unfamiliar with JS and objects I'd appreciate some assistance. I have one minor hurdle of great significance, one major hurdle of far lesser significance, and a couple of questions about behavior with the current settings that I probably know the answer to but feel the need to ask anyways. Firstly, for the presentation of the board, every thread except a single cyclical sticky where nominations would go would be locked. According to Mark, this means that the board cannot be locked down because that locks all posting. The next step would be to just disable thread creation, but that doesn't seem to be an option and I want to know why: // metaOps.js var informedHourlyLimit = +parameters.hourlyThreadLimit; informedHourlyLimit = informedHourlyLimit && informedHourlyLimit !== Infinity; if (informedHourlyLimit) { newSettings.hourlyThreadLimit = +parameters.hourlyThreadLimit; } else if (board.hourlyThreadLimit) { updateBlock.$unset = { lockedUntil : 1, threadLockCount : 1, lockCountStart : 1, hourlyThreadLimit : 1 }; } wSettings.hourlyThreadLimit = +parameters.hourlyThreadLimit; } It's clear why 0 would fail, but it can store negative values, but this doesn't work for reason presently unknown to me. Am I on the right track or is there an easier way to disable thread creation than this? Second, which I haven't begun investigating yet, it seems that reply chians are contextually preserved by renumbering posts, but I figure that there ought to be a means of preserving the original post number as well in the event of GETs. This information would have to go somewhere though, and I don't want to fuck with the structure of posts too much by adding extra data fields. I suppose it could go in the name field, and with some custom JS or CSS, you could modify the real post numbers with the original, but this seems like it'd be a very finnicky project. As for other question I haven't spent too much time thinking about. >are IDs added when moving a thread from a fully anonymous board to one where they're enabled? >are files unlinked when moving a thread to a board where files are disabled? Thanks in advance.

Can a global mod please turn per-thread IDs on in /trash/? The BO is doing the same thing the halfchan janny did and won't communicate / act on reports. If we're going to be left on our own, I at least want spammers to have to work to cover their tracks.
>>10745 I don't come to 8chan very often and yeah, it's disappointing but ultimately it's his board, his rules. It does make sense if he's looking to have some kind of continuity with the original. >>10747 it's over
>>10746 >It does make sense if he's looking to have some kind of continuity with the original The original /trash/ sucked balls because schizos were allowed to do whatever they wanted. Most every poster doesn't want a 1:1 /trash/, they want a /trash/ where they can get cozy in their own little pocket of degeneracy. Convincing everyone to move to a new board is a non-starter, so thread IDs at least give posters some way to identify and ignore shitposters. I know my request goes over the BO's head, but I'm half-convinced someone sniped the /trash/ name to just sit on it and do nothing. The meta thread on the board itself agrees that IDs would be a huge quality of life upgrade.

Hello from /vyt/. Thread IDs have been useful in dealing with shitposting without having to rely on moderation, but a decent amount of people have been scared off by the loss of anonymity. The less people a thread has, the worse this concern gets, mostly because the threads stay on the board for much longer. This concern would be greatly mitigated by having thread IDs reset after a certain period of time. I think maybe even just a few hours (1-4?) would be enough to deal with the worst shitposting, while also preserving most of the anonymity people are looking for. I'm not sure what the ideal time would be. It could possibly be made adjustable in the board options. I have no idea how feasible this is, but it would be greatly appreciated.
>>10802 can't you just lower the bump/page limit and bake new threads?
>>10803 The amount of time it takes for various generals to reach their limits vary wildlly. Some of them will cycle through 4-6 threads in a day, while others would last for weeks at the current rate. Lowering them to the point where the slowest generals can reset threads often would be unreasonable for the fastest generals, I think. The current limits are 500/1000, which are similar to what they were on 4/vt/, which was 310/1500. People are used to the old thread limits. It's not exactly the same, but it's close enough.

I would but my VPNs are all banned from editing on wikipedia lol. = 8chan.moe = 8chan.moe (also known as 8chan.se) is an English-language imageboard launched on April 21, 2020. It was created as an alternative to 8kun, aiming to distance itself from associations with QAnon and related controversies. Similar to 4chan, the site allows users to post and discuss topics anonymously. Like its predecessor 8chan, 8chan.moe supports user-created boards, enabling individuals to establish and moderate communities centered around any topic, provided content complies with United States law. The platform promotes a strong commitment to freedom of speech, though each board is moderated independently. Local board moderators are responsible for enforcing their own rules and may remove content at their discretion. 8chan.moe is currently partnered with the Japanese [[textboard]] [[2channel]].

Feature suggestion: make user IDs in threads change periodically, for example daily. On 5ch (and other 2ch sites as far as I'm aware), IDs change daily. I think this is a good baseline. I can see other people also brought up this topic before: >>10802 >a decent amount of people have been scared off by the loss of anonymity. I agree that IDs are a great way to keep spamming in check, but I think the problem is more nuanced than >loss of anonymity. I would argue that changing IDs lend themselves more to long-running threads than constant IDs exactly because it's a good balance between 2 factors: >1. preventing bad actors from spamming Even in >>10806 you'll see it's very easy to spot the shitshow as it's happening. You can easily filter people right away, and you're done with it. It's not like they can't change their IP if that's what they want. >2. old comments not being used as interfering context for new comments Long-running threads (regardless of whether they are generals or not) have discussions about various topics, so your several-day-old posts are very likely irrelevant context to your current ones. People usually go to the thread, have some discussions, then come back the next day to talk about something completely different. For these threads, having the same ID for a long time may also encourage attention-whoring and building a reputation, which are naturally present on most forums with names. >but nobody cares But it does make people feel differently. I think the point of this format is not to have to worry about reputation. tl'dr changing IDs would provide a more level playing field for actual discussion while still discouraging spammers. This way, I don't think people would be put off by IDs and decide not to participate in discussions.

>>10858 > but there are threads that last a lot longer than that. There used to be, before 4chan moved in.
>>10854 >>10857 Changing IDs are the default behavior on other sites, so I don't see it as a far-fetched suggestion, especially when it's a simple change. >change your IP/VPN This is not really about dodging IDs. Changing IPs for this reason may just make the experience even worse. >>10859 Lol, yeah, it was actually seeing slower threads with some actual discussion and IDs that made me think about this issue. On 4chan, most threads on big boards were simply spam that only lasted an hour or two.
>>10862 The problem is that Acid is slightly retarded and I assume his implementation of things will always be done in a stupid way. You would have to first tie ID's to something like bypasses, or decouple them from both bypasses and IP's entirely. Which is not how the system has ever worked. Then you would have to let BO's set the time for them to expire. Theoretically it's fine, but you're upsetting a currently known system for something that is rather niche. The bypass system needs to be reworked to work on a board by board basis rather than globally, and then BO's need to get control over bypass moderation features. And this is something I've been bitching at Acid/Codexx about for literally years. So it's unlikely to get implemented any time soon.
>>10806 >VPNs Paying to shitpost, or falling for honeypot?
How do I link other boards in the board's message? Doing >>>/boardname/ doesn't seem to work.
>>10867 I'm sure there's a lot more to consider, but I don't really see why what you're talking about would be necessary. Why would you need those or what would be affected by adding a parameter to the hash algorithm input for generating the id column for posts? Out of curiosity I just checked and post.id is generated by calling createId(salt, boardUri, ip, bypassId), and only if !hideId, else null is written to that column. Function createId() already takes the ip and bypassId as optional arguments, so I don't see how adding a date argument and passing the current date as a string to it would be difficult or what it would break. This function is also called when creating a thread (which also involves creating a post), but it seems to do the same thing. It isn't used anywhere else.
>>10871 That's because there is no >>>/boardname/ retard. Try e.g. >>>/v/
>>10870 Do you not know how to use a vpn or TOR the actual onion node is down because of course it is to remain anonymous on an imageboard? Is that too difficult to comprehend for a 4channer? Funny how you don't care about anonymity when your site forces you to use your raw IP address to browse and post, but suddenly care when a random sequence of letters and numbers is attached to your post for a single thread that changes when your IP changes or you enter another thread. Once and always, the only people who have a problem with thread IDs are the ones who want to be able to post dozens of times pretending to be different people engaging in a conversation with himself.
>>10873 It was an example anon, I tried adding >>>/a/ and doesn't seem to link it, just stays red like normal text.
>>10875 Works on my machine™ You can even link specific posts, like >>>/a/5270
So what is the general consensus about the site getting all this new traffic from the 8chan locals? A lot of people seem to be bitching because the evil 4channers are making threads they don't like on their boards or because they don't like how modern 4chan culture is to treat threads as a hangout so I feel like a thread like this would be best to get some opinions on the matter.

hello can I suggest a different censor for nsfw images instead of using the spoiler feature? in some threads over half of the images are marked as spoilers, but I don't want to click them indiscriminately, both because it's inconvenient and because it might actually be a spoiler I want to avoid. if there was a separate filter for nsfw that you could toggle on or off and leave the spoiler tag for actual spoilers it would make browsing more convenient.

Can't connect without VPN to 8chan. It's either "8chan.moe didn’t send any data" or 404. Right now, 404 on both .moe and .se, previously only on .se. moe still works with VPN, but some EU IPs have problems with that. I tried to switch DNS to 1.1.1.1 like someone recommended but alas nothing. Yesterday most of the time moe worked fine, but there was no connection to the site for 5-10 minutes after some time. Help. Right now I am on VPN, otherwise I couldn't post/lurk at all Don't know if I should create a new thread or ask here.

Quite a day! We had one node in the network deplatformed and another one crashed out completely. The site ran all day literally at half capacity. We're at work now getting it squared away. The crashed node is fixed and running again, so it should already be better.
>>10921 I don't know whether >>10916 this was a part of what you said, but still doesn't work for me. 404 on both moe and se without VPN.
To follow up on >>10734. My board is for a hyper-specific purpose and needs to not have thread creation or file uploads. After looking through the settings, I enabled both the textboard and thread file requirement hoping that this would lock out thread creation, but this doesn't work as lynxchan has first checks if the board is a textboard. However, I have a very simple modification to the backend that would solve this. // .../engine/postingOps/threads.js : 291 - 295 if (textBoard && !noFiles) { return lang(req.language).errTextBoard; // } else if (requireFile && !textBoard && noFiles) { // Original } else if (requireFile && noFiles) { // Modified return lang(req.language).msgErrThreadFileRequired; } It's a bit hacky and might lead to some confusion, but it's almost no additional work and doesn't compromise the security of the site. It would be awesome if you could do this, brother.

Good day everyone, for some reason I cannot access site without VPN, it shows 404 guru meditation XID: 965217663. I'm from Ukraine, and I seen someone posted that ukrainian ip is banned, but for some reason I could use site without problems (until now).

>>10939 Sadly Ukraine can't access the site anymore. Someone tried to get us deplatformed all day, but only one network caved. The rest either ignored it or forwarded us the emails lol. So we lost one node. That node has been replaced as of right now. And the broken node is alive and well again. And we're looking at two more nodes possibly coming online tomorrow just for funsies. We're no strangers to someone trying to whack-a-mole us, so we'll work on having lots of spares. Enjoy the site once again everyone. The network has its full capacity back.
>>10940 Thank you for reply. It's possible to recover access for Ukraine or I should get used to post using VPN?
Why am I globally banned for "spam" on the moe site?
>>10941 Keep using VPN for now, but I'm starting to think about some sort of split mirror. Like a domain on one server in the best possible place, JUST for anons either blocked by us or cucked by networks like whats happening with you. That'd take a little doing, but might be possible. Right now our #1 concern is keeping the site working good for as many anons as possible, but we're taking into account *everything* for future work. Feature requests, UX unhappiness, and network fuckery too. We'll get to all of it sooner or later.

Afternoon, ruskie newposter here on a (concluded) investigation into the 404 errors. Is there a way to make regex filters case-insensitive? "(?i)" doesn't seem to do it, and can't really do "/filter/i" either since the implementation only seems to let you define whatever goes between the slashes. "[Ff][Ii][Ll][Tt][Ee][Rr]" would work, but is annoying to type and hurts filter readability.
>>10987 First of all, I gave you a whole fucking week to respond to this issue (even though the .moe registrar explicitly gave you only two work days) and even sent you a follow up mail asking for a heads up, acknowledging you're probably pretty busy - a simple "we haven't gotten to it yet because we're busy" would have sufficed. Second, yes, the content might have not been illegal in itself, but it was the equivalent of a guy running out in the streets screaming "Raping children is good, everyone should rape children, here's how you find victims!" This also wouldn't be illegal, but would you just ignore it? Would you expect others to ignore it? Third, apparently this is actually illegal, at least in "parts of one country" if they blocked you, and how is it my fault if you don't check the laws of the countries you're choosing to host your site/mirrors more carefully?

Will the 4cuckz boards get deleted or merged with already stablished boards once their site is back up? I'm finding out that they aren't quite assimilating as you'd expect them to, they just form their own communities ignoring other boards that allows the type of posts they are looking for and or take over pre-existing ones demanding change. You can see the same thing happening across other chans too. It's not like they're going to be back and even if they are, the respective owners are going to be the first ones to actually ditch the site without handing moderation over to anybody that could actually care about maintaining the board. How to hide thread from the catalog view?
>>11044 You can open the thread, click on the hiding options in the OP, and select "hide thread".
I know there are probably a million issues you're dealing with, but you are going to need to rework the bypass system so it can operate on a board by board basis, and perhaps even a thread by thread basis because of the level of attention and activity the site has. Your ghetto solution of globally disabling bypass generation barely worked when this site moved at a crawl. And now people are learning how to severely spam the site and it's only going to get worse. I told you to make these changes literally years ago in anticipation of exactly this scenario.
>>11045 I want to hide threads by clicking on them in catalog It was shift click on cuckchan
>>11046 And by rework it I mean let board owners have control over bypass generation and the difficulty of the PoW system.
>>11046 >>11048 Have you tried reporting spam to the jannies? I don't want to solve more captchas, captcha is VERY shit on this site.
>>11049 No, that's a retarded solution. The bypass system is one designed so normal users don't need to sit around filling out captcha's. You fill out the initial bypass captcha which gives you a bypass cookie, then you don't need to fill another out for something like 48 hours. That means in times of spam you can disable bypass generation, or enable a proof-of-work bypass generation that requires your CPU to do calculations for a few minutes to get a bypass cookie. This let's you mitigate spam while impacting normal anons very minimally. Anyone that already has a bypass cookie won't even notice it's enabled. This allows you to still have anonymous utilities like TOR and VPN's accessible without forcing anons to compromise their privacy. It is a good solution that Acid came up with, but it's fucking useless when it can only be enabled globally by an admin.

Sometimes I'm drawing something on the Oekaki app and I can't post it because of the captcha being reset (and it doesn't appear on the reply box ) I need to save the drawing, reload the page and load the image again. >>11065 >Yes. It happens after I post to thread after I turned it off already. It won't stop updating. Even with a refresh. The suggestion appears to be this: - Add each board you want to see at the top to your favorites (click the star icon next to the board name on that board's page/catalog). - Copy-paste the provided bit of code to your settings' CSS section. The result would pretty much hide the "popular boards" section unless you hover over it, while the boards you use remain visible even when unhovered.

I've been following the /v/ spam debacle and I have a suggestion. I know Tor uses a proof of work algorithm to rate limit on guard nodes so spammers can't DDoS the network as easily. Would it be possible to add a PoW to posting? You could even use it to earn some crypto for site costs. Normal posters would just hear some fan spin for a few seconds after posting, and spammers would be unable to serve enough compute for high volume unless they have access to some serious compute.

But you can simply increase the PoW difficulty until its economically infeasible, with only minor disruption to actual users. It's good enough to keep the Tor network running.
So how exactly is he spamming anyways? Is he using a botnet or is it possible to do this from a single machine?
>>11220 I genuinely want to hope that PoW is all it will fucking take to dissuade the approaching brown hordes but I just don't have much faith due to how bad I've seen shit get out there.
>>11220 Very good post. I am perfectly fine with minor inconveniences to regular users in exchange for disrupting organized trolls like the sharty. Even better if the PoW mines crypto. Then trolls are literally paying site owners!
>>11222 Anon don't let the hope die, if you became jaded they win
>>11223 Mining crypto wouldn't be worth the time it took to even implement the code.
Also, I want to understand how he's doing the CAPTCHAs. I'm not well-versed yet, but is he generating several thousand cookie-less CAPTCHA tokens and distributing them to each of his bots or is it browser specific?

>>11214 It should be mentioned that while spammers are like cockroaches it's not really impossible to deal with them, a strong filter and a good banhammer will always work but you just gotta put that filter where it needs to be and staff the banhammer positions with people who know where shit and garbage is. Often on 4chan you don't even know what to report things as, but on here you can at least write custom reports which has already served me well against thread derailers and annoying retards. >>11221 No clue but your basic spammer has these options 1. a VPN that isn't banned 2. residential proxies 3. cookie replacements (whether having ones ready after waiting out a timer or not) 4. some combination of these unless they're going hardcore and ban evading with several different phones or something The IP Lurk Timer (15 minute timer) originally theorycrafted on 4/qa/ was technically implemented on 4chan, but only halfway because it didn't feature the original "when IP changes, cookie has to wait again", meaning that someone can prepare a cookie technically while making shitty posts and then switch faster than they should be able to, letting them ban evade without waiting.
>>11224 I've been jaded in general for over a decade now. But as I said, here's to hoping PoW ends up being enough to largely stop these niggers.
>>11227 Actually when i think of it the "wait when changing IPs" was technically implemented but it wouldn't technically time out the old cookie you had, instead it'd make a new cookie for the new IP, which means they weren't fully locked out.
>two shartyfags paragraph spamming to each other filtered. 0 useful discussion posted by them, just meaningless spam and speculation.
>>11227 When shit happens in the sheer QUANTITIES these motherfuckers are capable of you need something that stops it before it even gets started. Bots don't sleep and can do things multiple times faster than humans can. The only way you stop them from overwhelming the moderation staff is by having something in place that nyx's a majority of what they can do before they even hit the Reply button. >>11230 Plugging your ears and pretending what we're saying aren't facts is only gonna make your unpreparedness sting that much more when they finally find their way here. This ONE schizo is causing widespread problems on their own. An entire cabal or corporate data center will have it on it's fucking KNEES with your attitude towards the problem.
>>11188 Stuff like this is always a good idea. Stuff that checks for obvious spam behavior to alert mods would go a long way as long as the positions can be staffed.
>>11226 If we knew the specifics of it we'd have told you by now earlier in the thread. Obviously this schizo isn't gonna tell us the exact functions of his bots, cause that would make it easier to stop him.
>>11231 >something in place that nyx's a majority of what they can do before they even hit the Reply button. In the ideal world, that nyxing would be a lawsuit against malicious spamming, but this is not a perfect world.
Watching the xiv general right now, and his spamming is starting to die actually, don't know if the mods did something
>>11234 Obviously. But i am simply stating the direction they should look at it from, aim for an automatic system that PREVENTS the abuse entirely before it can begin outside of specific but heavily throttled avenues of approach so it can't overwhelm the moderation staff. And that it might honestly require an iron-fisted decision to achieve that.
>>11235 Shuddup and stop jinxing it again
>>11222 It kneecaps them since it scales with post rate, you can't spoof it. Using a system where only a single large PoW is solved pr. thread for legit users would be perfect I think, if you're banned you have to solve it again. As long as the challenge takes long enough, it will allow volunteers to snipe the spammers while they're crunching numbers. Combine it with a spam alert that measures the post velocity change and points to high velocity threads, then volunteers could make the decision to activate counter measures and the PoW algo could increase difficulty until they can follow along and control the spam. >>11225 Might as well do it since crypto PoWs are field tested. Monero for example is ASIC resistant and designed to only be mined on CPU. Even if it wouldn't make a lot, I think it would make the system more agreeable with users since they aren't just wasting CPU cycles for nothing by supporting the site in a small way.
>>11236 The obvious answer is rangebanning a specific IP subnet or ASN, but that's the IDF method of resolving this problem since a lot of civilians will be caught in the crossfire, and it isn't even a surefire stopgap depending on the resources the spammer has at their disposal. Is it typically obvious to tell if a spammer is using resources from a commercial VPN or only residential?
>>11237 I jinxed sorry anon
>>11227 But how on earth would he have access to thousands of proxy addresses? Doesn't that cost money? It doesn't make sense to waste resources. I feel like this is like the Imgur hack a decade ago that shut down 8chan for a few weeks. IIRC, the gist of it was that any time an image was loaded on Imgur, it would also request a swf file from 8chan. https://www.malwarebytes.com/blog/news/2015/09/imgur-abused-in-ddos-attack-against-4chan https://www.nexusguard.com/blog/ddos-attack-hits-4chan-via-imgur-exploit Maybe we should keep track of when the attacks occur? He can't be at his computer all day and night, it might narrow things down to chart the activity for a targeted block.
>>11233 We might not know the specifics, but surely we can make some educated guesses. It's probably not a new methodology as no one would waste that just to spam a thread endlessly.
Also, I just outright cannot verify my email anymore. I've set my personal email, a new one on cock.li, doesn't matter. The site refuses to send me a confirmation email.

>>11241 >But how on earth would he have access to thousands of proxy addresses? Doesn't that cost money? It doesn't make sense to waste resources. You assume they got them legally. Maybe they used compromised systems who are unaware they're being exploited? I assure you the parasites from 4chan are a tough bunch. Do you know about PEE? Or lolipiss as they call it. I don't remember all the details but it was a /g/ /cumg/ tool that's still around, and it lets users embed all sorts of heinous shit into images (including metadata) basically just to bypass moderator overview. This forced 4chan to automatically strip all metadata (including transparency from Webms) on the site, but as far as I'm aware the tool still works to some degree. That's just one aspect of the level of technical autism these faggots indulge in. >Maybe we should keep track of when the attacks occur? He can't be at his computer all day and night, it might narrow things down to chart the activity for a targeted block. Maybe if it targets the threads manually, but if there's some automatic process to go after names or mentions then he could just go to work and come back with a spammed thread anyway.
>>11238 Sounds like something that works in theory but it seems the site is short handed on code devs, so I'm hoping they find some competent codemonkeys before the brown tide starts to truly roll in. I don't know the specifics of these things, I just know the sheer magnitude they're capable of. I'm not famililar with JavaScript or Node.js, but I could probably come up with something and there are already a few clever people already making frontend scripts that could be scouted. Quick suggestion, it'd be great if support for tegaki replays was added. That way users could both upload their replays and view others. Unfortunately, I think the only way to validate that a .tgkr file is an actual replay is to run it and inspect the generated image. So it might need a lot of server CPU to prevent bad actors from sending random binary blobs.

>>11214 We do, in fact, have iron-fisted options at our disposal. A couple years ago we dealt with some very persistent and technically adept spammers who hit us on a relatively similar scale but using VPNs and Tor. The only real difference with the guy who hit /v/ today is that he had a very large number of IP addresses to burn, and they're well distributed and otherwise innocuous. He's basically burning a custom botnet on us. Lord only knows where he got it from, or whether he owns it or rented it from somewhere. That does add some challenge. Also we're hearing rumblings that traffic to the site from Poland is getting disrupted, but we haven't received anything official about it, so it may be another Eurocuck network cucking somewhere. Polanons should try using .se and let us know if it happens there too. We've only heard about it affecting .moe so far. In good news, the crashed node from yesterday took my fixes and continued working today with no issues at all. I received notice of >200 illegitimate complaints made against us between three of our providers and they didn't even bother opening a ticket about it, so the deplatforming campaign against us is still a massive fail. We've upped some site parameter limits to better accommodate the extra load in Lynxchan, which should fix a couple minor errors people occasionally see. All in all things look good on the technical front. I hope everyone has a great Easter tomorrow! We've got plenty to work on.

>>11293 So one thing I don't understand: You are blocked in both Ukraine and maybe now Poland, so I assume some government agency was involved - but you still have servers in both of these countries. So how does this work? Why didn't they take down those servers as well? Are they just that incompetent? Or did they turn them into honeypots lol?
>>11317 That's actually why. From what I understand, it works like this: >We set up in a country. That country, like all countries, has multiple networks owned by corpos and such that connect everyone. We get a server from a network that's okay with our site. Lets call them company A. However some other network that's connected to them are cucks. We'll call these cucks company B. What happens is, company B sees our traffic passing over their wires to go to and from company A because that's how the Internet works. They don't like this, but they can't dictate what company A is doing, so instead company B just blocks our shit from going over their network, maybe by malforming or plain old blackholing it. The result is that we have a server with company A that most of the world can use to get to the site, but anybody who lives in the area covered by company B's network can't access the site even though the two are neighbors. And company B may have enough leverage to pressure other networks to do the same thing. That's how it went down with the French ISPs back in 2021. We had servers with a smaller company there but some big French network cucked us completely. Similar stuff was done to Kiwifarms when they got deplatformed, only theirs was even worse because they owned their own ASN and IP block that could be targeted wholesale. Edit: Fun fact, Cloudflare did this to us too. Any traffic that would come to this site, no matter where its from, is malformed and cockblocked if it passes through a Cloudflare controlled network at any point in its journey. And no website can be set up on Cloudflare if any of its domains contains the string "8chan."

>>11293 >>11299 Probably a good idea would be to create tools that aren't just site-wide but board-wide. I'm a BO and I simply have no real tools to combat any kind of spam. Bans are a joke as they're extremely simple to dodge and spammers have no limitations on dodging them as network resources are more than plentiful and that's all it takes. In scenarios like this, the only solution the site provides is to stay glued to the screen to delete posts manually, which is stupid. And no one is going to come to the aid of a board that has a spammer problem unless it's a huge one, since it also wouldn't make sense to turn on a site-wide nuclear option for something that affects few users. >>11318 >they owned their own ASN and IP block that could be targeted wholesale oh shit
>>11318 Interesting, but also kinda disturbing. I'd just have assumed that e.g. Ukrainian government says "nope, this shit is illegal here, can't be hosted in our country", which would still be cucked but at the very least following some kind of law. If there's just some company that doesn't even have anything to do with your site going rogue and saying fuck you because they don't like the stuff, that's just another level of messed up. Welcome to the internet in the 2020s, I guess.
Is there a way to set an image limit for threads? On our board we don't want threads to become too large and setting a limit on the images that can be uploaded there is a good cue for users to create a new thread and link it in the old one. Just the bumplimit isn't really cutting it. Also I've often had that the board's allowed mime types get reset to just allow image/png when I change something completely unrelated in the settings, dunno if its a known bug or affects only me
>>11320 This has happened so many different times in so many different ways. When OG 8chan exploded people flocked to some other site whose name now escapes me that was maintained by some Australian guy. The attackers went after them too and although their host didn't bend to the pressure, their upstream provider threatened to cut the host off and they were forced to kick the site off their network or have their business destroyed.
>>11293 The .se domain seems to work. The ISP .moe stopped working on is Play.
>>11322 I'd understand if it was for stuff like literal CP, but that can't really be the issue here because then that wouldn't be necessary - CP is already illegal pretty much anywhere, so the hosters/site admins already are required to take this shit down ASAP, so there should be no need for a block. Of course there's lots of countries where they treat stuff like loli the same as actual CP, but then again the same principle would apply and hosters would just need to take it down, no need for a block.
>>11316 That falls strictly under local board jurisdiction.
>>11323 >>11293 If it's that the case, could the ips from the.se domain be used also on .moe?

Because when you are hosted somewhere where loli = CP, there's a real risk the hosters won't just shut you down but hand over all the user data they have, which could spell real trouble for anons who also live in cucked countries. (Of course if you live somewhere where that shit's illegal and use a site like this it's kind of your own fault if you don't have basic opsec)

>>11324 For years now companies have ganged up to take the law into their own hands. >>11329 Yes, that's pretty much what kinda ended up happening. People needed to start recreating basic internet services that everyone takes for granted, such as DDoS protection. >>11330 >Of course if you live somewhere where that shit's illegal and use a site like this it's kind of your own fault The problem is that there's so much controversial shit hosted here that probably some of it would always fall into illegal territory somewhere, so everyone should use a VPN/Tor. And then the next problem is that VPNs and Tor are always in the eye of the storm because of how easy it is to use them for spamming. I think only recently they started restoring Tor functionality to more normal levels and it still has the awful max file size limitation.
>>11333 Slightly fixed up and made into a userscript, so you can use it already. sorry i cba to figure out publishing on greasyfork. // ==UserScript== // @name Clean YouTube Links // @version 0 // @description Cleans YouTube Links // @author (me) // @match *://8chan.moe/*/res/* // @match *://8chan.se/*/res/* // @match *://8chan.cc/*/res/* // @run-at document-idle // @grant none // ==/UserScript== (function() { "use strict"; const target = document.getElementById("threadList"); const observer = new MutationObserver(function(mutations) { mutations.forEach(function(mutation) { document.querySelectorAll('.divMessage a:not(.quoteLink)').forEach((link) => { if(link.href.includes("youtu") && link.href.includes("si=")) { let stringindex = link.href.indexOf("si=") let sanitized = link.href.split(link.href.substring(stringindex, stringindex+19)).join("") if(sanitized.substring(sanitized.length-1) == "?") { sanitized = sanitized.slice(0, sanitized.length-1) } if(sanitized.includes("?&")) { sanitized = sanitized.split("?&").join("?") } link.textContent = sanitized link.href = sanitized } }); }); }); const config = { subtree: true, childList: true }; observer.observe(target, config); })();
When I'm on a /last/ thread and follow a >>quote for the same thread, it loads a new page since it links to the /res/ version. Do I have to fix this user-side or can you do something about the way /last/ and /res/ versions are constructed?
>>11335 Nice. Hopefully this gets incorporated into the OFFICIAL 8chanMinusMinus asap. Honestly it needs to be a sitewide thing, no reason to allow tracking tokens in the youtube links.
>>11334 >The problem is that there's so much controversial shit hosted here that probably some of it would always fall into illegal territory somewhere True, but loli content is afaik the only thing (aside from actual CP) where it could be illegal just *viewing* it, depending on which shithole country you live in
>>11338 I think at some point they booted the zoophiles but that was here too for a long while.
A word of warning, the /xivg/ thread spammer has woken up and started up again.
