you know what i have realized after rewatching some older romcoms? that a romcom existing for the sake of the romcom alone is just meh the actual substance comes from the underlying character drama haganai and oregairu started plenty cliche and shit, but what elevated them and made them truly memorable and genre-defining works was the character drama and development, for which the romance was just a driving force nowadays it feels like authors don't really do that anymore, feels like they just focus on the who ends with whom, without giving the characters any more depth
