How do I get back into otaku culture after ignoring it for the last 12 years? What are the most culturally important animu and mangos and visual novels of the last decade? I feel so lost. I'm not really asking for recommendations, I'm just interested in knowing what media you anons think are "culturally important" to being otaku and why.
>>23921 We're in a golden age of isekai anime right now, I'd say the biggest names are Konosuba, Re:Zero, and Mushoku Tensei Frieren was a big hit for non-isekai fantasy, as well. Shingeki no Kyojin and HeroAca were huge for battle shounen. Oshi no Ko was also incredibly popular lately. There's probably a bunch of huge names I'm forgetting to mention, 12 years is a long time and don't take this as exhaustive.

>>23921 I've been watching anime since the days of Haruhi and K-On, so with my personal bias: >Yuru Camp The only Kirara manga that has surpassed K-On and got loads of people to begin camping. >Made in Abyss A fantasy show with original ideas. Even normalfags enjoy and defend it despite the mangaka being an open pedo and inserting all of his fucked up fetishes to the story. >Kemono Friends The biggest dark horse and upheaval in anime history with no exaggeration. It also had the biggest fall from grace due to its drama with the firing of the S1 director, causing massive damage to anime kingpin Kadokawa. >Bocchi the Rock One of the biggest otaku shows in recent memory that has gotten very popular very fast. >Onii-chan wa Oshimai Genderbender show that has themes that resonate with NEETs, amazing animation, and loli fanservice. It catches a lot of undeserved flak from people fighting the Western culture war against LGBT. >Uma Musume Almost unknown in the West, but HUGE in Japan. The second season in particular broke the all-time record in BD sales. It's spokon with a healthy dose of cute girls. >Jashin-chan Dropkick Funny violent comedy show that's influenced by Bokusatsu Tenshi Dokuro-chan >Kobayashi-san Chi no Maid Dragon A popular kyoani show that features dragons with huge tits, has themes about family and community that's very endearing. A movie is coming out soon. >Thunderbolt Fantasy A taiwanese puppet show written by Gen Urobuchi(writer of Madoka, Saya no Uta, Fate/Zero, etc). It's so good that it's honorary anime. >Machikado Mazoku Rated AOTY by 2ch in 2019. The MC is deadly cute, and the story is lighthearted on the surface with extremely dark undertones. >Gochuumon wa usagi desu ka Yet another Kirara show with an obsessive fanbase. Like the other anon said, there's a bunch of isekai and new shounen that are heavy hitters(adding on to what he listed, One Punch Man, Mob Psycho 100, Kimetsu no Yaiba, Goblin Slayer, Overlord). If you want to watch more artistic shows then there is Ping Pong the Animation, Space Dandy, Flip Flappers, and Sonny Boy.
>>23921 Manga and anime are no longer the center of the culture. Otaku culture is focused around gacha and vtubers. Comiket statistics prove it. That's all you need to converse with most weebs today. Gacha and vtubers.
>>23921 >otaku culture there's no such thing anymore. it got COMPLETELY overtaken by normalfags thanks to COVID global lockdown. It's called "weeb culture" now. moepigs migrated to vtuber >>25043 and ecchi fans migrated to gacha games since sexy stuff are problematic now and aren't allowed in anime anymore unless heavily censored.
>>25054 >moepigs migrated to vtuber Not true. Anyone who thinks 3D is PD knows that vtubers are 3D whores wearing a mask.
>>25056 Well unfortunately the majority of otaku don't seem to hold your views and comiket statistics prove it.
>>25056 those otaku are weak willed and gave in to the illusion that vtuber is 2.5D

>>25151 I'm not saying that vtubers aren't popular, just that you shouldn't conflate them for no reason.
>>23921 otaku culture was already going downhill around that time so you didn't miss out on much. as for anime, i recommend sorting by rating on anidb.net, looking at pictures and synopses, and going by your gut and 3 episode rule. don't listen to other faggots telling you what to like and what not. that being said >>23963 >is*kaislop, sh*nenslop kill yourself >>25043 vtubers are not otaku culture, they are literally 3dpd whores milking desperate coomers. too bad you are too much of a newfaggot to know about their past lives. gacha barely qualifies. kill yuaruserufu.
>>26766 >they are literally 3dpd whores milking desperate coomers those desperate coomers are oldfag otaku who used to take creepshots at cosplayer pantsu at comiket they've always been hypocritical about this 3DPD mentality. that was just pure cope of being a ronery unwanted virgin,
