UMPC/Handheld thread Anonymous 06/03/2023 (Sat) 18:44:40 Id: 6d9cdb No. 837183
Old thread: >>608298 News >The Rog Ally has released, and it's.. fine. The claimed 2-3x performance boost was closer to 5%-30% and the custom GUI isn't anywhere near the level of the Deck >The Edion in Osaka talked about last thread has set up a longer-term or possibly permanent Steam Deck display following a presumably successful 'trial market', Japan is now one of the few, if not only, countries to sell the Steam Deck at major retailers >Computer and hardware manufacturer Orange Pi has soft-announced their first handheld after a leak. It reportedly accommodates both Linux/Windows, the device will either use a 7800U or a RK3588S processor for the higher-end model and will launch in October with three models costing between an estimated 1500元 ($220) and 3500元 ($500), though prices are not final. There is no publicly known name for the device yet >Gaming analyst firm Omdia estimates Steam Deck has sold over 2,000,000 units so far, having sold 1,600,000 in 2021 alone, and will likely surpass 3,000,000 this year. This makes the SD not just the bestselling UMPC in history, but possibly majority of UMPC sales ever. The firm believes the device "will open the door to a new PC gaming product category" Thread questions >What do you own? >What are you playing on it? >Anybody gotten involved in the scary world of hardmodding yet, and how did it go? >Anything you're excited for? CES 2025 UPDATE Lenovo Legion Go S will be the first non-Steam device to use the OS. https://store.steampowered.com/news/app/593110/view/529834914570306831 A big takeaway here >In addition, the same work that we are doing to support the Lenovo Legion Go S will improve compatibility with other handhelds. Ahead of Legion Go S shipping, we will be shipping a beta of SteamOS which should improve the experience on other handhelds, and users can download and test this themselves. And of course we'll continue adding support and improving the experience with future releases. So they're now allowing users to download SteamOS directly, though it still sounds like it's a handheld-focused version of the OS.

>>1059680 You'd have to have someone make the first leap for others to follow. Once one company does and has moderate success, others will follow suit. I wish madkatz was around to make a controller with trackpads+joysticks+thumbstick+fighting game stick
>>1063876 Valve already did pretty well with the Steam Controller until they got sued for patent violations (due to using grip buttons)
>>1063900 >nuhuh you can't implement this feature because my company that exists entirely to sit on patents submitted it several years ago :^) I HATE INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY I HATE INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY
>>1063903 anon please, cool it with the antisemitic remarks

Faux-90s Steam Deck ads
>>1082927 I think it'd work better if it was changed to 90s appropriate specs and games. Like swap out the CPU to a K6 or K6-2 and the GPU to something like a Riva 128. Of course the ssd would have to be swapped to an HDD because Flash storage was ludicrously expensive.
(212.11 KB 786x1152 s-l1200.jpg)

>>1082935 Might as well replace the whole thing with an ad for Game Gear or Lynx then since Steam didn't exist in the 90s either
>>1082954 Valve existed then. As for time period correct specs and advertising we could pretend that Steam was instead just a line of gaming pc devices (E.g. a Desktop Laptop and early PDAs) instead of a online distribution platform. Though we would be lacking a solid 1st party lineup with only Half Life being there, and Valve not being a big company yet, so we would have to look into more theoriticals, like Microsoft funding it to show off Direct3D6/7. And I could see then it being a big show off of other Microsoft published games, maybe with a partnership with Sierra since they published Half Life 1.
>>1082968 The point is obviously just style. Once you start changing the actual content, you might as well change everything.
(8.81 MB 640x360 Lindows Rock.mp4)

Seeing as this is the closest thing we have to a Linux thread.. I just found out Lindows still exists, and was renamed to Linspire. It's actively developed. Literally never once have I heard about this OS. Out of pure curiosity, how is it?
>>1083589 Its one of the bland distros out there, as it does literally nothing special and yet costs money
Well, the Switch 2 sucks. Steam Deck all the way.
>>1085614 The Switch 2 being shit doesn't make the Steam Deck good. Hell, if it's hackable the Switch 2 will likely be a far better device than the Deck owing to its specs, resolution, refresh rate, screen, ergonomics, battery life, size, storage, weight, and the ability to play nearly all Switch games without emulator compatibility issues on top of eventually receiving its own native and likely exclusive library. It's price is also only $50 more expensive than the cheapest deck model and comes with far more storage.
>>1085645 Steam Deck 2 all the way.
>>1085645 It'll definitely be far better at playing Switch games (base Switch is admittedly already better for that since Switch emulation on the deck is a mix bag), but it won't be able to play the metric fuck-tons of PC games. Also homebrew emulation on consoles fucking sucks, I learnt this from the Vita. You're free to call any other UMPC better, honestly I went for the Deck since it has touch pads and I heard Windows is awful for handheld devices.
Encase anyone cares I made this guide about how to run this ancient Pac-Man game on the deck. It's kinda shitty since I haven't figured out how to fix the audio but maybe someone knows how to.
>>1085698 I haven't tried myself just yet, but I came across this reddit threat in regard to the game on Steam Deck. Perhaps it can help.
>>1085816 That's actually the thread that re-sparked my interest in getting the game to run, I've tried before but always got fumbled by the shader error. Apparently, when you run the installer, it also adds some important files into the prefix, this is why adding the game directly to steam doesn't work since it makes a new prefix without those files. I tried doing this set-up with the vanilla installer, this also solves the shader texture issue but unfortunately the game crashes before the company logo videos play, I'm not sure if there's a way around this since dgVoodoo didn't work, so currently the MagiPack repack is the most viable. I'm going to try installing the MagiPack version on native Windows and run it using the already configured prefix, hopefully that has promising results. I also tried using Bottles like the OP of that thread but it's being a massive pain the ass about the installer, for some reason it has an issue finding the .bin file but won't let me navigate to the directory it's in.
>>1085698 >>1085816 >>1086117 Is the game any good though?
>>1086119 I have fond memories of playing it as a kid, but I never managed to beat it, and I played it some more in recent years, It's a very good Pac-Man game, You have a jump that needs to recharge you can use to save your ass in an Emergency. There are 45 Mazes and they have Interesting layouts, such as them being Spherical and not simply a flat plain. There are also some mini-game levels in between, and little cutscenes. It's a very charming game, and just talking about it makes me want to get it up and running again so I can beat it this time.
>>1059611 >xperia play's design is patented till 2030 sadly so nothing like it till then Doesn't the internal mechanism for a sliding gamepad expire in the May-July of this year? Had recently learned of a kid that basically had to recreate the sliding controller by using some external magnets and something involving Magsafe. Supposedly got crowdfunding and a corporate backer now, but tbh it mostly amounts to a slightly less clunky Moga or whatever is the most notable controller peripheral. It is closer to the Xperia Play, but it's still functionally not as integrated into a single device.
>>1086117 I attempted to install the game myself using GE-Proton just like the comment said, did the same steps, but it's result has been failure on my end. Not sure where I went wrong, but I got as far as the .exe for launching the game giving an error saying I don't have the textures.
(138.79 KB 1200x899 V.Smile_logo.png)

Has anyone managed to get VSmile emulation to work on MAME on the Steam Deck? The only videos I've found are from this guy, but he doesn't have a tutorial (and he heavily uses AI, which kind of makes me skeptical of its validity in the first place). I know that MAME is super specific on which ROM and BIOS files you use depending on the version. https://youtu.be/wCOXQZWm_-s
What's the cheapest one that has good steamOS support? I only want one for emulation and for testing things out on if it has a good battery life.
>>1097124 Obviously steam deck LCD
is it me or pirated games run wayy worse then they should on the steamdeck?
Besides fanboyism why would anyone get a steam deck at this point? It's no longer the strongest for PC handhelds, the peripherals are nothing to speak of, and even for what it gives you the price point is now higher than equivalents. OLED or not, accepting a sub 1080p screen in 2025 is now a massive cope that usually includes the "pixel density" meme as if that's not as retarded as "all you need is 60 fps"
(13.78 MB 1680x11058 Vita 8chan chart 2025 update.png)

Reposting this vita chart which some anon just created Should a vita-specific thread be made? Anyone else interested?
>>1121409 Oh brilliant, I just dusted mine off yesterday, I always bring it camping deep into the woods. So serene to play cozy Japanese games in the forest at night.
Valve should make a vita-like with Steam OS and a laptop dock. Can't we finally have a pocket x86 device that isn't gay? Fuck having 4 computers and a phone.
>>1121409 >vita-specific >>822861 Have you tried checking the catalog? OP who made this thread btw.
>>1111007 800p screen for a device that isn't powerful enough to do 1080p gaming is fine.
>>1111007 >UMPC virgin babble Best value, best inputs, still unmatched in lowest wattages. >peripherals What the fuck are you even talking about? What peripherals? That stupid eGPU scam?
>>1111007 I mostly use mine for streaming games from my desktop. >Supersampling on every single game >Can max out all graphics settings >Comfy formfactor >Trackpad for mouse control >Custom control sets are great for mod menus Plus if I suddenly decide to play on a large screen at 360hz, it's already running there.

>>1111007 >Besides fanboyism why would anyone get a steam deck at this point? Valve is still 100% backing the device themselves and their branding power has guaranteed the homebrew scene will also stick around for the foreseeable future, at least until a Steam Deck 2 comes out which might not be for a while. Besides, these handhelds have never sold on power, the Deck might not be able to run the latest AAA games but it's still more than enough for what people do end up playing the most on it.

I got this thing for 300€ a while ago. Only needed to replace the analog sticks (they're just Vita 2000 sticks). Really nice for retro games (up to PS2, with only some games requiring a little more power), and plays some newer games decently well. Dark Souls 2 runs at a crisp 30FPS with 4W/8W min-max! Fan's a bit noisy, but there was a cooling upgrade that I could try hunting down, or make my own. I just wish it didn't buzz like a bee when I slightly tilt it while it's spinning fast. I like this thing, but I think I'm gonna upgrade for the Win Mini down the line, I can see some floating around for about 900€. I think I can sell this thing for about 250-300€, then go on with the Win Mini.
