Ports that are completely different games Anonymous 03/25/2025 (Tue) 16:29:20 Id: 150ba4 No. 1082590
A really interesting phenomenon prominent during the 2000s, but existed outside of it. It wasn't uncommon for a game to launch on 5-7 different platforms with each version being a completely different game, this was especially common for tie-in games. Though I'm less interested in that, and more interested in the games that were something else entirely. Be it a different campaign like Quake 2 N64, or just an entirely original game like the GBA Daikatana Zelda-like. I'd like to hear about more of these I'm unaware of.
>>1082709 > Extremely impressive to hear voice acting of that quality in a Super Nintendo game. That's Mega Drive anon, and there's no voice acting in it.
>>1082685 Speaking of Lego games, Lego Rock Raiders had a PC port, which was an RTS, and a Playstation port, which was an action game.
>>1082759 Then I'm thinking of the other sequel to Jurassic Park that wasn't The Lost World. I must have been thinking of The Chaos Continues. That's the good one. Would The Chaos Continues count as sort of like a port of Rampage Edition? Would Turtles in Time count as sort of the same game as Hyperstone Heist?
>>1082773 Rampage Edition was it's own thing and it's good
Dragon Quest XI for 3DS seems to be more soulful than the UE hogwash than the main game is. Too bad there's no english patch for it.
>>1082635 >>1082656 >the force unleashed There's also a port of it and its sequel to the DS. I haven't played the first one, but the port of 2 is actually pretty good.

The Harry Potter series eventually standardized its film adaptation tie-ins, but for the first few entries there was a lot of variety. Virtually every version of Philosopher's Stone and Chamber of Secrets were different across platforms. The PC, console, GBC and GBA games were all different games, and even on consoles the Playstation 1 had a different version somewhat based on the PC version with but infamously dodgy character models. Most were platformers/action-adventure but the GBC and GBA ones were turn based RPGs, and furthermore they were all only semi-based on the film adaptations; while they drew on them for the overall look of characters and environments, they were a lot more stylized and there was some stuff taken from the books as well. The art styles are quite charming and hold up really well visually. Sadly from about Order of the Phoenix on, they became standardized as straight movie tie-in games, using the likenesses of the actors and sticking strictly to the film depictions of scenes, with the same drab colour palettes of the David Yates directed films. There's a lot of nostalgia for the first three or so games, whether on PC or on console, especially thanks to the great soundtracks by Jeremy Soule, who deliberately avoided listening to any of the John Williams film scores to not be influenced by them, so there's an entire alternate score for Harry Potter in the first three games. The PC and console versions both used the same soundtracks though not in the same order. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cQ38d5903BY https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iPg5U65didA https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vg9VduHcYiw
>>1082646 Why didn't lizards ever evolve non-shitty legs?
>>1091878 Came in the thread to post this iirc one of the developers for the game boy color port of the games, i think it was in a reddit ama or a youtube comment or something, he said that WB would only pop their nose in once every couple months, and every time they did so they would be so impressed by the graphics that they would forget to actually screen the game for content. Same way they could get away with being a lot more accurate to the books while the console games were under heavier scrutiny to be based on the film.
>>1082590 The Quake 2 prerelease includes Quake 2 64.
I remember some dumb parent's argument on how it was deceiving to have these different versions especially when in came to age ratings, like "I got my child a game for Game Boy Advance and then he asked for the PS2 version, but I found that they have different age ratings! What am I gonna do? The developer is forcing me to buy improper games to my kid!".
>>1092017 Legally, were the games based on the movies or the books? Like how there were two competing series of Lord of the Rings games because EA had the rights to adapt the movies, but another company had the rights to adapt the books. It's also why people are so baffled at the first Ninja Turtles game on NES. People expect it to be based on the show, but actually both the show and game are both based on the comics, but both very loosely, with some shared ideas that aren't in the comics, but were planned to be used in all the adaptations. Actually the toys were the same situation, which is why the turtle toys don't actually use the same designs as the cartoons. (No pupils, weird scowls, etc). >>1092034 The age rating thing is stupid, but it is totally a legitimate argument that many of the games in this thread are complete bait and switch situations where they are trying to trick kids into thinking they're getting a different game than they actually are.
>>1092048 They were supposed to be based off the harry potter movies, not the books. Any book-exclusive elements (like Peeves) had to be cut out of the games, but the GBC version sneaked a few in.
>>1092071 Peeves was most certainly in the PC version however, and I believe the PS1 version since that was roughly based on the PC version. >Woahey, it's Potty-wee-Potter!
>>1092071 >>1092297 I think the only reason Peeves was allowed was because he was originally intended to be in the movies but got cut last minute.
>>1092305 Played by Rik Mayall no less, it's strange that I don't think we've seen proper deleted scenes of it despite how notable the movie is, maybe because it was cut early and there's no finished VFX for him. There's this picture floating around but I'm pretty sure it's just a fan mockup of what it might have looked like with a random photo of Mayall. Peeves is not black & white and smoky looking like the ghosts, he's described as brightly colored and more solid looking, since he's a poltergeist, not a ghost and can physically interact with things.
plot twist: it's actually good
>>1092554 and then I drop the image.
>>1092297 First 3 PC games, 1 and 3 had him as a recurring boss, 2 had him as a random enemy spawn from chests.
>>1092297 Potteh, yer ugly but what can we do!?
I don't have images handy on this VM, but the OG Rainbow Six, back when it was a real tactical shooter with planning mode and action mode as separate sections rather than being a multiplayer-only hero shooter, was a strange case. The N64 port was as close to identical to the PC version as possible, but the PSX port was a completely different game with different levels and having the first person weapon viewmodels actually present.

>>1082685 lots of gba "ports" were like that One of the trippier and wackier ones is Jet Set Radio for GBA
>>1109533 >>1082621 I had the DOS version. The one that turned into a Oops All Raptors! DOOM clone half way through. I still have fond memories.
>>1082607 I had a female friend that commented on this game at the time. How portable games like this aren't good. That they're more suited for consoles. She was right.
>>1082623 >Does anyone else feel like this thread is just recycling discussions? Most threads on this board are. Every general here are using old posts and re-writing them through chatgpt.
>>1082709 >Don't forget that Jurassic Park was also on NES, Master System, Game Gear, 3DO, and DOS, and they were all totally different games. Also Sega CD. That's the one I had. It was pretty cool, basically a point-and-click adventure with some lite action elements. Lots of edutainment segments presented by an actual paleontologist, Robert Bakker. In The Lost World: Jurassic Park there was a character that was basically a reference to him, it's the bearded guy with red hair who gets eaten by a t-rex.
>>1082864 Really wanna play that version.
Mysims Agents were completely different between the Wii and DS versions. The DS was more like the other Sims/Mysims games with you living in town and customizing your sim and house while the optional story was just about stopping a thief from finding and stealing ancient treasure. The Wii version was an adventure puzzle game with you investigating areas and solving mysteries revolving around a corporation seeking the Crown of Nightmares
>>1092559 all of the turok gameboy games are good

>>1082685 >>1109869 I love isometric GBA ports so much, /v/ros... my favorite is Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines, it's the better of all the T3 titles in my eyes, and a lot better than most of the T1 and T2 titles from the 90's aswell, I just found it too unforgiving when playing on its hardest setting, so I gave up, it filtered me, but playing on the default settings you feel like a powerful terminator and it's stellar.
>>1109869 The Jet Set Radio GBA port was from Vicarious Visions who did the GBA Tony Hawk games; SEGA saw those and figured they were a good fit. Shame VV was forced into the Overwatch/Diablo mines after THPS1+2, I think in a perfect world they would've helped with the JSR reboot. >>1151554 There's a GBA Max Payne that should be up your alley. It's from the team that did the handheld GTA games (and Alfred Chicken).

Conker’s Pocket Tales has entirely different level layouts, camera, and interface, along with some graphical changes, between the original Gameboy and Gameboy color. This is despite being on the same cartridge. Their saves aren’t even cross compatible, making you restart if you swap between original Gameboy and Gameboy Color. I don’t know of any other black cart GBC game that does this. >>1082864 Try the launch PS4 version. You’ll have to buy a disc copy, but a lot of people said it looked better than the multi-platform version.
>>1082635 >Sonic Colors >Sonic Generations Glad someone mentioned these. People acting as if Sonic Mania was the only good 2D sonic game since Sonic 3. Ignoring that these two gems existed.
they are not portages then.
