should I install Fedora 42 lads?
What's the best way to access a shared windows folder on linux? CachyOS specifically. With SMB, I can access the windows machine by its IP address, but not its hostname (which would be better since the IP keeps changing). Reading various threads and the arch wiki, I think that needs winbind, but the samba docs seem to say winbind no longer works the way the arch wiki says as of samba 4.2. I installed the samba package and don't even see a winbind service anywhere to enable, there's no winbind package either. Or is there something better than smb I could use?

>>17917 On 42 right now, it's bretty gud. Beyond usual Fedora shenanigans, should you need proprietary software, it's been stable and enjoyable. If you don't like Fedora you won't like this release either, though.
I'm newer to programming, I've been learning for about a year or so now, and I'm getting tired of having to emulate linux on my windows machine to get things done. How much easier would things really be if I had a linux work computer?
>>17963 why do you need to emulate Linux to develop on Windows desu?
>>17965 Emulate probably isn't the right word in retrospect, but I've had to use chocolatey to download basic Linux utilities like make and a few others whose names I can't remember in order to complete assignments in some classes. I remember having this problem when I was trying to get postgreSQL working in particular because the instructions I had required me to build the program from some zip file IIRC and there were a dozen Linux utilities that were required.
>>17966 I haven't used Windows regularly in years so I may be way off base, but wouldn't WSL be useful for that?
>>17966 I agree, try WSL (Ubuntu for Windows on the MS store IIRC). Used it for development for years. Though if you're looking to have a technical career it's probably beneficial to get familiar with linux.
>>18019 >>18030 Thanks for the recommendation. I'll definitely look into WSL for now. I think I'll probably still end up getting a Linux work computer in the future.
Where are my openSUSE chads at?
In my audio settings there's Digital Stereo (HDMI 2) Output, Digital Surround 5.1 (HDMI 2) Output, Digital Surround 7.1 (HDMI 2) Output, and Pro Audio. Which one should I be using? I have 2 speakers and a subwoofer connected to an AVR, which s connected to my PC via HDMI. I assumed I should be using stereo but was playing a game last night and realized it wasn't using my subwoofer unless I changed it to 5.1 or 7.1.
Greetings /fglt/ I have recently switched one of my two devices to an arch linux operating system to improve my usage of computers. I started this journey with 0 prior experience using GNU/Linux and it has been a blast. My question to you isn't of a technical nature, rather I seek a software recommendation. On Windows 10 I enjoyed using a software called PlayNite to organize and run my collection of video games. What software do you use or recommend to organize your video games? I looked at Lutris before, but I am slightly upset about the banner urging me to register on their website. Is there a good alternative?
>>18114 I used to use OpenPEPE, but it always krashed hard. It was almost certainly a KDE issue rather than a SUSE issue, but it kind of put a bad taste in my mouth.
