the problem with that is that in europe in past (till the millenia) visible genitalia in public was not accepted (like the same with pubes in japan), during the 90's there was a big step forward in that so that even a fully visible vulva was acceptable to show in public (altho still not in every european country)...
during the 70's it was very prominent, cuz artists found a way to show erotic, but without getting labeled as pornographic - they simply drew or added a gigantic bush to the girls, whic actually was á la mode that time anyway...
so leaving out the cleft of venus is more a way for those artists to be able to show their art in museum, which is public available in europe... - it's complicated... but it got better... novadays we even have "open public" erotic exhibitions... so even children can actually look at erotic art... the definition of pornography got changed rapidly during the past few decades, so in europe the nude body doesnt even count as offensive anymore - only when it comes to the actual visible sexual act or detailed sexual organs in arrousing state it is considered pornographic... thats why you can easily see nudes in free tv here with guys dicks hanging out or girls sunbathing with spread legs, but never be able to see them having sex...
