Everyone spoke a certain way and knew all the memes and respected OC creators. Also everyone watched le anime, even people who were on more "normie" topic boards. There were a lot of exoduses during that time, but I think what really killed it was the internet corporations going hard on censorship in 2016, as retribution for electing Trump. Those redditors who came in never learned to blend in because they felt comfortable, since they were "right wing." But they rejected the artistic merits and creativity of the site to post politic shit. And now lots of "anons" are straight up against anime and will criticize you for playing video games and are obsessed with telling everyone how they don't fap to porn or listen to music or watch film etc etc. The heart of imageboard culture is artistic.
