Looking to buy something but aren't sure what to get? Ask here.
>>16501 >>16507 Even more importantly, do NOT run mission critical things like your crypto finances on the same device you run sketchy software on. Ideally don't even use the same subnet.
I wish to sideload the Firefox Mobile version of the Firefox Browser (note: the one for phones, not the one for smart tvs) on an Android TV. Will it work with the classic sideloading methods or are there restrictions in place?
>>16586 Actually let me rephrase that: >>103253717 I want to buy a TV, but sadly all the models available are """smart""" tvs with their own crappy OS. I wish to know: 1) Which OS (Android TV, Fire TV, Vidaa...) lets me sideload the most Android based applications; 2) Which OS allows me to sideload the Mobile version of Firefox (not the gutted Smart TV one, I'm talking of the vanilla Mobile Firefox browser that lets me install extensions and whatnot); 3) If adding a smart box like those Chinese sticks with Android TV/Chromecast on them is a more viable strategy; 4) If QLED/OLED is better than UHD, or if there's other sorts of emerging tech that offers better quality or lower prices.
>>16587 Buy used there are plenty of dumb tvs, or buy a "display" and get a sound system for it. Dumb tvs are called displays now but they don't have speakers built in.
>>16587 Mini LED or some such splits the backlighting up into small sections for better HDR. If you just want a screen then contrast ratio is probably all you need to really look at since you can manually make colors look good enough. Watch some reviews on youtube maybe. Can't help you much on android tv, I got a chromecast tv dongle that they're discontinuing now, it did let me put smarttube for no jewtube ads and the ability to cast to it. The cheaper ones only did 1080p if you do manage to nab one for $20.

A few stupid questions of mine that I am unsure where to ask: I have a SCSI keyboard on a small desk, there are two pcs on this desk, a Commodore 128 and a more modern workstation, is there some kind of converter/switcher I can get to use this keyboard between both pc's somehow, as it would save space and be a lot more practical I'm currently looking at acquiring a setup for local AI, the pc I am looking at purchasing comes with a xeon chip, I will be running either CentOS or fedora, it's been a long long time since I've meddled with pc hardware; should I just get dual 4090s as I've been recommended or is there a cheaper option available to me due to the commercial chip, alternatively would it be cheaper/better/easier to build some kind of gpu array to interface with the pc for AI purposes? Do local models exist for generating functional code or do I have to wait for hackerman to bless us all with its presence on torrent sites?
>>16691 A kvm switch can toggle between them if you find some way to get it to usb. Can't help with ai.
>>16696 I know I can adapt scsi to usb, but the cord to do so is 180 minimum and I am not sure if it works the other way around because scsi is a little funny, do you know if there's a scsi kvm switch or if it is just something that exists for modern usb devices
>>16720 Honestly I don't know, maybe you can search and see if theres a diy arduino or breadboard project for it to usb.
>>16723 I've been looking for a while and I found this https://www.amazon.com/Monoprice-101354-DB25-ABCD-Switch/dp/B001W0FI18 I'm not 100% sure I can use this to switch a keyboard between two computers, as opposed to two peripherals between one computer, but I'll give it a shot once my budget isn't rock bottom, I just can't believe no one has made a SCSI to USB since 20 years ago
>>16728 What about "db25 to usb"?
>>16730 that makes it much more feasible thank you anon
>>11850 >the official stated limits are usually false, for example I had a 128GB MicroSD in a phone with a supposed limit of 32GB. The manufacturer just didnt feel like validating and guaranteeing anything larger. True for smartphones and many other devices. NOT true for many security/dash cameras, too large of a card will actually result in corrupt/lost video.

Is 16gb of VRAM enough to run local LLM's for 3d model generation and maybe 2d animation generation? I am going to buy an nvidia card, probably a 16gb one. I have 64gb of regular ram.

How feasible is a 2GB HD 7850? I have an old i5-2500K PC with 16GB of DDR3 (no GPU). I want to turn it into a PS2/PS3 emulation machine. Other than emulation, the most demanding game I play with this PC outside emulation is Dawn of War Soulstorm and SWAT 4.
>>17144 You can probably do PCSX2 at reduced settings. I wouldnt bother trying RPCS3.

Does the Zune require proprietary software to load the music or can almost any program do it?
Any recommendations for end to end encrypted private text/voice chat that doesn't require me to host my own server?
>>17537 E2EE Voice/text is a very broad concept. Does it need to be like discord/mumble? There are a handful of stuff that tries to be similar to that, but the most popular is Element. I haven't kept up with the others to know if they surpassed Element yet. If you want it to be more like direct messaging then there's signal, session, and simpleX.
>>17547 The two things I'm looking for are asynchronous group messaging (a small group is fine) and voice calls/voice chat with up to 3 people, both with end to end encryption. Other than that I'm pretty flexible. It's been a while since I've looked matrix/element, does it have e2ee voice calls now?
>>17552 Signal appears to support most of that, but has the issue of requiring a phone number to create an account. Though at least now I think you can add people using usernames instead of needing to share your phone number. Session and SimpleX don't appear to support group calls yet. I think Element might support E2EE voip/video, but I'm not certain. https://element.io/blog/introducing-native-matrix-voip-with-element-call/ This blog from a few years ago says it was disabled when they first released it so they could test it easier and get bug reports. But I'd imagine by now it's probably fully implemented. Signal is becoming the normalfag friendly standard for an open source secure messenger, session and simpleX exist in that edgy darknet anonymity/privacy/security area for extreme OPSEC, and Element is generally the clunky discord stand-in that isn't the best at anything but suites the more traditional IRC/teamspeak style of desktop software.
>>169 169 Question about ThinkPads, the newer T series are expensive as hell and mostly not even available in my country, and getting an older refurbished one carries the risk of me getting finessed because I don't understand shit about laptops and I'm from a third world shithole. So my question is, are the E series worth it for the budget price, or will they turn into e-waste after 3 years?

Planning on building a PC for my parents, they want something that'll do office tasks, streaming, video conferencing, and a bit of media editing and should last the next 10 years with occasional upgrades. Any recommendations on cheaper parts or is this fine? https://au.pcpartpicker.com/list/q4qpRV
>>17862 >pc for parents >rather basic tasks >almost $1300 I'd laugh, but then I see the aussie url, and I don't know what it's like down under. But for that sort of thing, you just grab a $200 used office machine off Craigslist.
>>17862 If your parents only do these light tasks, consider getting a used business-grade mini-PC like an HP EliteDesk or ThinkCentre. They're cheap and plenty because businesses are unloading them by the thousands, and more than powerful enough for your basic office and web browsing
>>16970 I got Hunyuan3D to work on my 3060 12GB, but it was rather slow. For 2D animation / video stuff the king right now is Wan2.1 by Qwen. Almost all tools and workflows are optimized for 24GB of vram. There are some tricks to get it to run on 16GB but it will be slow in worse quality. If you buy a GPU specifically for local AI (especially image-related) your only real options are 3090s, 4090s, and 5090s. Workstation cards will cost even more. Tooling for non-Nvidia cards is still in a bad state even now.
Need some advice on which phone to pick between four that are under a discount large enough to fit my budget. Galaxy A35 5G, Galaxy M55 5G, Redmi Note 13 5g or Note 14 4G. Usage is just internet browsing, chatting and gaming. There is no upgrading for something better than those, the A35 would already lead to a few missed meals.
I'm looking to get subnotebook with a pointing stick/keyboard nipple that's 8x10 inches in dimensions. Anyone got a suggestion?
>>18071 Doesn't matter but be warmed that Redmi phones have super aggressive background app killing feature copied from Apple. You will miss your boss phone call on your messaging app because it's not on. Check this site to learn how to fix this https://dontkillmyapp.com/

>>17889 I know it's far from ideal in terms of price, but my dad wanted a new PC, not a secondhand system. The price isn't so much an issue to him anyway, as long as it works and can be comfortably useful for another 10 years. >>17930 >They're cheap and plenty because businesses are unloading them by the thousands Maybe true in burgerstan, but we don't have nearly as much of a used market here in Australia for old office PCs, at least in my state. People are either offloading their previous-gen gaming PCs for way too much, for 10 year old office PCs that are way too old.

>>18156 ah I see then yeah your PC sounds a great option, it should also be futureproof and easily upgradable
>>17144 >PS3 emu >2500k Abandon all hope, even an FX 8350 is a better idea, PS2 will be fine enough but anything prior to Haswell for intel is a very bad idea (we are talking about more than halved performance on an already very shitty 4C/4T configuration where realistically RPCS3 shouldn't even be ran on anything less than 4C/8T) >>17862 For AUS prices this ain't bad, the case is a bit fancy and the mobo is a bit cheap if future upgrades are to be made but whatever
