These days, a laptop is an important Possession. I got myself a Surface Pro 7 few years ago. The thoughts that went into buying it 1. Microsoft has good support (Wrong) 2. The hardware is well built (Right) 3. Touchscreen means I can draw and annotate and take handwritten notes (Wrong) 4. Since I don't use any heavy apps, heating won't be an issue (Wrong) 5. The whole setup should be less than 1200 grams (Right) I do travel a lot, so compact and light makes a huge difference. 8 gb ram is not really a limitation still. But my laptop heats a lot now, even in the cold winter. Anytime you choose a touch tablet device, battery life is halved unless you choose an arm processor. In summer or in India, the heat issue becomes a serious cripple. The touch and pen function works well enough, but combined with heating issues and lower batter life, its usability is limited at best. I would get a separate tablet for this or not use it at all. I will need a new laptop, though I will buy one end of this year. It will be a normal non touch screen this time, solid battery life and 32gb ram at least. Processor wise I am good with anything. 6-8 cores seem to be minimum even in mid range processors. An N100 is equal to an old i7 which is more than enough for my tasks. Browsers are the heaviest apps, a few tabs alone lead to heating. >>8721 Depends on your subject and preferred OS. The main issue with T480's is lack of SSD.

>>8723 Yeah Sata SSD is slower than NVMe but if you are not doing anything data intensive, you are good. Just put some thermal paste on the processor. The 8th gen intels are slow. You can get similar power in an N100 machine, but the keyboards and screens are inferior. T480 is the last machine to have a hot swappable battery too , so good choice.
