Apparently between 1882 and 1968 4,743 people were lynched in the U.S., 3,446 of which were black. So around 40 black people were lynched per year.

A lot of those lychings were for serious crimes, many of which they would probably have been executed for anyway if they hadn't gotten lynched first. Mob justice is much worse than the actual justice system, but that doesn't mean it targeted innocent people every time. By comparison, in Detroit alone there are around 300 murders per year, and nationwide there were 19,141 murders in 2019. Lynching were real, but it was a much smaller phenomenon than the role it plays in popular imagination
