To host your paid app in the App Store, Apple gets a cut of the sales of the app (covers hosting fees, maintenance, development, and support). They also get a cut of any subscriptions sold within the app or in-app purchases (basically Fortnite's whole thing). Epic was linking people from inside the app to outside it into a browser where they could buy the same things (and thereby not have to pay Apple a cut). As this was a violation of the terms of service for developers in the App Store, Apple cut off Epic's developer account. Epic sued. Apple won.
