They're hard to notice because they're usually hidden by the top part of the shoes, they were made much less noticeable in his designs starting from Adventure, even more so in more recent games since Forces. In his original 90s design, they were a grayish blue. Adventure designs made them fully dark gray, and his 3D models in later games made them smaller or more hidden. The Generations-onward Classic Tails 3D models made them bigger again, and light blue, and that's how it looks in Superstars as well. However, it's more gray in the 2D Mania art
It's interesting that they always made sure to keep it even in the modern designs, even when no one is going to see it or notice. I like how it looks on the Classic Tails 3D models a lot now that it has come to my attention, it's cute. I wonder how fans of blue shoes Tails feel about it
