Freemasonry is literally a bourgeois-merchant movement, it's not in contradiction with the material & social changes of the era, its an expression of it. It's not even a secret in normie academia that they were influential during enlightenment revolutions and culturally shaped the time helping to wrestle power away from monarchs.
