It’s been ten years since Gamergate happened. I never cared about it, but the fallout surrounding it lead to a portion of the 4chan userbase to move to 8chan. It was a wild time, the freedom we had. Didn’t like the moderation on a 4chan board? Make the board on 8chan. Make a board for a specific interest. I remember so many people moving over to the site, including content creators like drawfags. It was such a breath of fresh air to be able to post and not be so bogged down by the moderation of 4chan. I remember in the early days of posting and having Hotwheels replying to something I said, it felt nice having that connection with the admin of the site. It felt like the dawn of a new era. Of course, the good times didn’t last forever. I seem to remember a solid six months where 8chan was busy, but then as 2015 rolled on you could feel it wasn’t the same, and people were quietly going back to 4chan, even the ones who proudly said they wouldn’t. I stopped visiting the original 8chan sometime in 2016 or 2017, because it felt so dead. Then the original site was taken offline in 2019. Now with 8moe, a spinoff of the original site, it feels like a shell of its former self. In the decade since Gamergate happened, there has never been a single event that has caused a mass migration of 4chan users to go elsewhere. Despite the fact that people proclaim 4chan has gotten worse and worse over the years, people still stay there, stating there is no place else to go. 8moe still exists. So the question I’ve been pondering for the last little while is this: why do people stay using 4chan when they have alternatives? Will there ever be another event that will cause 4chan users to leave en masse? Or will everyone who likes the image board lifestyle just stay on 4chan 4ever?
>>475167 >why do people stay using 4chan when they have alternatives? Basically it boils down to everyone saying "I'll go if everyone else goes." Or when they get here, they see it is dead, and then instead of trying to living things up, they just leave.
>>464315 You're a faggot 8chan was busy enough until it was taken down for the heroing
>>475517 2019 8chan was massively different from 2014 8chan in terms of activity.

I really don't know how I feel about this new exodus. On the one hand it may breathe new life into the site and make boards other than /v/ more active, but on the other hand as of now the posting quality on this site has dropped significantly.
>>475553 200pph board with loe quality posts is better than a 2 pph board with quality posts
>>475553 Well, at least I'm having fun regardless
only a little sorrow at this point. /pol/ was the cancer killing 4ch since 2015. so it's hard to be sad over the 11 year old rotten corpse. moot saw the writing on the wall. thankfully we've been spared the /pol/chuds found some other site to ruin
>Something actually happened
>>475553 Seems like there's a mix of people that hated 4chan and are enjoying 8chan more and people that dislike the culture here and miss 4chan. The latter will probably leave in a few days.

Because someone leaving 4chan doesn't necessarily have to go to another imageboard. They can also improve their life and just get the fuck off social media.

>>475613 The only reason i lurked 4chan was to see various factions fight it out on /pol/, it was a priceless indicator on where things are going, now i must piece things together only from mainstream media and it is going to be a much less complete picture, if it doesn't come back in one form or another, it will get increasingly hard to figure out what agendas are being pushed. Also fuck kikes.
>>475671 Total chud L
>>475819 To be fair that stopped really being possible in 2022 since AI spam really replaced human actors at that point
>>476023 Fair point.
>>464327 > 20 year old morons excuse me i'm 21
>>464315 >but then as 2015 rolled on you could feel it wasn’t the same, and people were quietly going back to 4chan Infinity Next turning into a dumpster fire was mainly the reason why people left. The migration basically making most boards unusable is the reason why the bunkerchans exist (now currently called the webring) so you can thank firetires and Josh for that colossal fuckup. Its also the reason as to how Jim bought 8chan.net and drove it to the ground with board takeovers and the pandering to qboomers.
>>464315 For me its because funposting and ritualposting is allowed. The schizos, despite their annoying presence, actually generates discussion. When you have too much rules against the chaos, despite the proclamation of free speech, people will still want the chaotic. Anime pic for that weeb feel.
>>464367 he'll be about the third person to try it. Round the decay Of that colossal Wreck, boundless and bare The lone and level sands stretch far away
>>475563 Wrong
>>464315 Do you want to hear a truth bomb? It's because 8chan.moe doesn't show on Google. The only way to find about 8chan is if you know what an alt chan is and search for alt chans. Then you'll find a site maintained by one guy that has all the chans. I tried sharing 8chan on 4chan but 4chan blocks the word "8chan" You can't post about it. I don't know if they blocked it because of old 8chan or they intentionally block .moe but 4channers will never hear about 8chan.

>>476558 It's a wordfilter from when GG was taking off and everyone was spamming to go to 8chan, and they never got rid of it. I used 8ch to reference it once in a blue moon well after the original shit itself and rebranded to 8kun >>476284 It doesn't help that instead of having one unified site for everyone to jump over to, there were like 8 different boards all making their own little hole. In my experience, most of the people who stopped using 8chan left because they got EXTREMELY pissy over the fact that /pol/ stopped agreeing with them when not crossboard circlejerking in the 4am threads on /v/ and swore off imageboards all together
>>476558 shorten to 8moe
>>464315 I was never able to find a board with more than one post per century. were there EVER any boards nearly as active as 4chan or sharty boards?
>>476944 Anons wont stay distributed, there can only be one chan.
>>464332 I kept doing it for the lulz and it only seemed to start arguments. Shit was weird. Getting banned for the lulz
>>475613 Politics ruined real life too. It's not just a chan thang. It's a people are reaching new lows of intelligence and agency thing
>>475167 >So where did everyone go? >list of a bunch of different places they might have gone This is the issue - every one of those options is realistic and bears part of the load. I'm sure there's been an uptick in everything else. Altchans obviously, the sharty no doubt, discord, probably even normalfag shit like twitter. Every possible place for anons to go they have gone, but at the same time they've scattered to the wind.

>>464315 >why do people stay using 4chan when they have alternatives? Because, as cringe as it sounds. the "Soul of 4chan" is something that needs to be preserved, and what i mean by that is not harkening back to a time of doing gay ops and running the internet as the infamous website of elite bassass trolls, but what 4chan was initially founded as, a fucking anime site to talk about anime and weebshit. Admidst all the drama, rumors, and slander that 4chan amasses thanks to the unhinged boards like /pol/, /b/, etc. I personally feel like the reason to continue to go back to 4chan is uphold it's initial purposed so that that culture shock hits newfags when they make the leap into imageboard faggotry visiting 4chan, that the main take away from their exposure is that the place is just anons talking about their interests and fandoms for the most part and that they they realize. "Oh....you know, 4chan is actually kinda chill, It's just a run of the mill website to talk about hobbies." That soul of 4chan is something I would say is important as to why 4chan can't be simply just given up on. It is the eldest and last bastion of not free speech, but the last true gate way and cultivator of genuine online exchange and interactions. 4chan's initial purpose must be preserve and it cannot be define by chaos the glowniggers of /pol/ and others containment boards instigate.
>durr why does hurr Lack of activity. >but we can Activity still lacking.
>>475685 You know very well that isn't happening
>>464315 I'll be honest, I barely used social media my whole life and only started using it because I wanted to discuss toku. But everywhere I went was fucking insufferable and that's how I ended up in 4chan, so I'm a newfag to that site since I've only been there for 6 years, it year got worse and worse bu I simply didn't know anywhere else to discuss the topics I like. Found 8chan due to a thread on b4k and now I'm here, I'm hoping that I get to stay here since the main reason people usually leave these kind of sites is due to lack of activity to have a proper discussion, which sucks because this site and its moderation is clearly better than 4chan so I hope people don't act like a battered wife and return there in masse. I think something that would help would be making an equivalent script to 4chan X for 8chan.
>>479492 4chan was extremely useful as a "pop culture aggregator." You could go on there and learn something new on every board topic (not just animu). It's sad even if we get a place to shitpost we will never get a place where people are so plugged in to culture and art and aren't being poseur faggets like artfags in real life. You could argue that pop culture itself has fallen too far to have interesting discussion. I think if anons ever collectivize again (off of 4chan) we need to bring creativity and hope to the unwashed masses. This is all assuming western civ doesn't collampse
>>479795 hopefully being sent here will get people making actual new OC again
project chanology was painful when it happened, but this is why anon is decentralized, they cant take us down. They cant fuck with us, because we have other chans to pick ourselves back up with. I can see either 4chan will come back or the otherchans might step up and become the new home, that or anon splinters again. Fuck those soyjack fags anyways, now they have a containment site
>>464315 Newbie posters have heard of 4chan. They haven't heard of 8chan.moe
